So if Arkham Asylum was defined by its limits, Arkham City is a careful, considered exercise in stripping those limits away. Its open city lets players be a different kind of Batman to the stealthy predator of Asylum – this is the Batman of dropped smoke pellets and theatrical getaways, the Batman with an ear to the ground for the strong picking on the weak, and the Batman who floats above the city with a gothic majesty. It's less focused, but more diverse, a miniseries rather than Asylum's moody one-shot. And at its heart, Rocksteady's defining take on its star remains just as you always imagined him – kicking, punching, sneaking and now flying. Arkham City might be filled with landmarks to visit and villains to smite, but being the Batman is still its primary draw, and Rocksteady doesn't let you forget it.

Batman: Arkham has "run its course"

Tuesday 15-Dec-2009 10:49 AM 'Asylum sequel to move into other areas of Gotham, developer suggests

Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 could not be set in Arkham at all, if comments made by the game's senior gameplay programmer, Paul Denning should be taken seriously.

Speaking in a retrospective on the original game in PC Zone magazine, Denning said the Gotham prison had probably "run its course" and other areas in the city would be "ideal" for gameplay.

"I think you're probably right in that it's almost run its course," he replied, when asked if there were other areas of Gotham developer Rocksteady would like to explore.

"We did pick a selection of buildings that we thought would fit the [original] game well," he added. "You could quite easily point out that there are various things that you wouldn't usually find in an asylum especially on an island that's supposedly self-contained.

"So, you could always expand that out and there are games in the past that have gone down that route. But I think you're right. Gotham itself is a fantastically realised fictional city and there are so many places that would be probably be ideal for gameplay and great to explore."

The debut teaser trailer for Arkham Asylum 2 suggests a setting outside of the original's madhouse. According to the programmer extraordinaire though, gamers shouldn't expect an open-world Gotham.

"I think sandbox games that do that well are so hard to realise," Denning told PC Zone. "GTA is obviously a fantastic example of one that gets it right but there are so many that get it wrong and I think you have to be so careful when you take that route.

"I think if Arkham Asylum had been that kind of game I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been as good."

From the trailer it looks like it could be set in the whole of Gotham perhaps.

Very excited about this!

It was pretty inevitable that they would do a sequal after the success of the first game.

I'd wager he's still getting over the effects of Titan. It'd explain how he looks.

Also: epic news. 8-)

The vital question is, will Mark Hamill suck up his previous statement and return as the voice of the Joker? I know it's shallow but a portion of my hype for this game is weighed on that simple fact.

Certainly sounds like the same laugh if that trailer's anything to go by. Though I wasn't aware he'd said he wouldn't return. :|

What did he say? I thought he loved playing the Joker, you'd have to really to get a performance like that.

On the subject of the game, I've got to admit, when I saw the video listed on GT my first reaction was dismay, I thought it was too soon and as it was AA2 I feared they'd succumbed to the money and just be making the same game again.
The trailer put those fears to rest though, not sure if Arkham has pshyically moved or if it's it's a mental thing/metaphor for the state of Gotham. Like in Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy where that guy lives in an inside out house on the beach so he can be outside what he considers to be the asylum.

Where did you get that from? The poster on the wall?

Edit, the poster is of uncle sam like the one on the new teaser website.

Noticied that there is a police blimp up in the sky like the ones from the animated series. :D

This is awesome news, this year's game of the year for me, all they need to do is improve the boss fights and iron a couple of other little niggles and this could be perfection.

Skywalker said Arkham Asylum 1 was the last time he'd play the Joker. Presumably the original asylum is currently unusable after the events of the first game and the game is set in a temporary replacement in Gotham City, which seems a bit dull.
