Virgin internet alternatives

So Virgin have doubled our internet price as a promotional deal ended. My wife is of the opinion that there are alternative providers that use VM's infrastructure/cabling, but I didn't think there were. A lot of the stuff on the net is about phone/net/TV, and to be honest we just want the internet through them, barely miss the premium channels on Sky etc. She'll want free weekend calls as well, I don't even know our phone number.

1) Can we use other providers, or are we stuck with VM unless we get a BT engineer out to put in a normal phone line?

2) Do most routers come with USB ports for NAS nowadays? I was about to start using it and now might have to get a new router :lol:

All I can say is we'll be heading to Virgin as they've just installed their network in my area. We've tried both BT and Sky Broadband who are probably the best of the rest but ultimately, the rest all use the same BT network - i.e. are crap.

VM use their own network, you wont find a provider with the same pipes. Phonelines are all BT regardless of who you choose, iirc. The current VM router doesnt have USB.

If the contract is in your name cancel and open a new contract in her name or the other way round. Should be able to get a new promotion price as well.

I complained to VM about price hike they gave a loyalty discount for 18 months of £7.50 per month which keeps my broadband only bill under £30.00

Just phone them up and say you're thinking about leaving. They'll offer you a better price.

Was hoping you'd reply! Cheers for that info on pipes etc. I must have imagined my router having USB ports, or subconsciously merged the back of my router with the back of a Wii, as I was setting one if those up the other day :fp:

Good idea, will threaten to leave then try to swap account holder. Best to keep my trump card in hand as I imagine they'll only let us flip it once.
