My wife and I are looking to plan a holiday for about 4 to 7 days this December and Scotland is one of our destination choices. I know we have some Scottish forumites so I was wondering if you could recommend some places to see and things to do. We're keen on seeing Christmas markets and will be taking our daughter with us so could do with some child friendly activities (she'll be about 19 months old).

We were thinking of flying to either Edinburgh or Glasgow and maybe taking the train to the city at don't fly into but are happy to hear suggestions.

I recommend the Glenrothes branch of Domino's Pizza.

Edinburgh is lovely, especially the old town. I recommend The Scran and Scallie for fancy lunch, The Bon Vivant for haggis bon bons and Hey Palu for cocktails.

If you want to go to a Christmas market, why don't you go to Germany?

I was outside Aberdeen for a wedding around this time last year. Couldn't believe how beautiful the countryside is there. The views as well :datass:

It has been a while since I last went to Edinburgh.

Wildfire. It is the best steak restaurant in Edinburgh in my opinion.

I'm not sure if this would be interested you both and I thought it was interesting to explore about the history of it.

I would say go on November 30th for St Andrew's Day but it was
actually pretty subdued when I was there in 2013 - I didn't even realise until I saw a building on the Royal Mile lit with a Saltire

I've been to Edinburgh twice and also Fort William to climb Ben Nevis. The first time we went I proposed to my wife so it's got a special place in our hearts and it's a beautiful city. We didn't get over to Glasgow as it was a surprisingly long train journey if I recall. We stayed for the first night in a fancy hotel on the Royal Mile and then decamped to Port Seton which is a few miles out (my wife rented a car to go up the Golf Coast at least one of the times but Prestonpans station is 1.3 miles away according to Wikipedia and will take you into Edinburgh). We had a really nice little cottage which was looking out onto the sea when there was a crazy storm going on - was amazing!

Whereabouts do you live? That would obviously affect transport routes.

Edinburgh is the more "touristy" of the two, but for good reason. It's got a lot of stuff worth seeing.

Glasgow is worth a visit too though. The Kelvingrove museum alone is worth a visit, as is the Science Centre and the Botanical Gardens. Not to mention I think the shopping in Glasgow is a bit better. There's also loads of great restraunts and bars in the centre and even some of the outer areas.

EDIT: Should add that there should be decent Christmas markets in Edinburgh but prepare for them to be busy. Same in Glasgow.

We enjoyed Edinburgh a lot when we visited. A bit less flat than Norwich though, so I hope you are fit and mobile. Went for a walk in a park after tapas and ended up climbing a volcano. :!:

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

But that doesn't mean you can't fleece tourists on the Royal Mile who think you do!

I suppose Burn's Night and Hogmanay are more recognised celebrations of Scottish culture, but it was 2013 and leading up to the Indyref so I was a bit surprised there wasn't a bit more national pride on display for your patron saint if you take my meaning.

That can't be true because every St George's Day all we hear in England are racists telling us how everyone else celebrates their patron saint's day.

Glasgow is my preferred city of the two but Edinburgh is better for tourists in that it has the castle, the camera obscura (actually great!), National Museum of Scotland ghost walk type stuff, the zoo, royal mile, Holyrood, etc etc etc. You can get to places like Leith too.

Glasgow has the Kelvingrove, the Hunterian, the Riverside Transport Museum (actually fantastic, definitely go!), botanical gardens, Burrell Collection, science centre, and bags more style and personality.

I often stay in Falkirk for work and I love it but probably not a major tourist destination. Got to plug Rough Castle Roman fort and the Falkirk Wheel though.

I grew up in Scotland which is why I'm so miserable but haven't been back in nearly 35 years. We plan to go for a long weekend at some point but don't really know where, probably a city first and maybe somewhere more scenic a second time.
