PostWaitrose named Britain's Favourite Supermarket in-store; ASDA the worst

BBC News wrote:Which? survey names favourite UK supermarkets

Waitrose, Iceland and Marks & Spencer have topped a Which? supermarket consumer satisfaction survey.

Shoppers gave Waitrose the award for best in-store experience, with Tesco and Asda trailing in eighth and ninth place respectively.

The consumer group said Iceland was voted best for online, closely followed by Ocado, with Morrisons in third.

The M&S Simply Food chain won the convenience store category. Which? surveyed more than 7,000 UK shoppers.

Customers were asked to rate stores and online operations based on their experience in the past six months on categories such as quality, value for money, service from delivery drivers, how easy it was to find products, and whether shoppers would recommend the retailer to a friend.

Which? said customers were particularly happy with Iceland's convenient delivery slots and friendly drivers, helping it to top the online category for the second year in a row.

The consumer group also said Waitrose's helpful staff had won over shoppers in the in-store survey, with customers saying that its spacious store layouts made groceries easy to find.

M&S came second in the in-store category, with Aldi and Lidl placed joint third.

Which? said Aldi and Lidl were fairly "evenly matched", with both scoring particularly well on value for money.

Asda was at the bottom of the in-store table in ninth place, and was also joint last with Sainsbury's and Waitrose in the online rankings.

Must do better

While Asda was seen by consumers as being generally good value, its food quality was rated as average.

Richard Headland, Which? magazine editor, said: "With concerns over rising prices the competition among supermarkets is fiercer than ever.

"While value for money remains a top priority, in-store appearance and the availability of quality and fresh products can also go a long way to satisfying shoppers' need," he said.

An Asda spokeswoman said: "We know that we need to do a better job for our customers and all our colleagues are working hard to make a real difference.

"We're getting better every day and we are confident that customers will be pleasantly surprised if they shop with us today compared to when this survey took place last year - and we'll be even better tomorrow."

Supermarket survey - in store experience:

Answers based on consumer satisfaction and likelihood of recommending the store to a friend
    Waitrose 74%
    Marks & Spencer 73%
    Aldi 72%
    Lidl 72%
    Morrisons 70%
    Iceland 69%
    Sainsbury's 67%
    Tesco 66%
    Asda 62%
Supermarket survey - online experience:
    Iceland 77%
    Ocado 76%
    Morrisons 74%
    Tesco 74%
    Asda 71%
    Sainsbury's 71%
    Waitrose 71%

Never had a problem with Waitrose, Tesco, Ocado or Sainsbury's home delivery - I find Sainsbury's the best one because they always give out free items to try, and they have a separate Nectar points website too. Tried ASDA once when I had a voucher but I found the garish green website horrendous to navigate. Again though everything arrived okay. Never tried Morrisons or Iceland.

I'd put M&S Food above Waitrose though - ready meal central it may be, and you could never use it as a main shop, but it really is such a nice play to be in. The fruit and veg always looks far more appetising as well for some reason (I think it's a combination of the lighting and packaging).

I strawberry floating hate walking around ASDA. It's chaotic, it's loud, the own-brand food's terrible, you're bombarded with junk offers (that are impossible to resist!), and take away the green branding and it feels exactly like Walmart...

I like Tesco for their massive variety and ClubCard benefits (pays for a date night most months of the year for me and the wife), but I prefer the larger aisles in the Sainsbury's stores, less cramped.

If I could afford it I'd shop at Waitrose all the time, but life just isn't fair.

ASDA is a gooseberry fool hole.

Never had a problem with Asda myself, we usually do our big shop there as my other half works for George and we get discount. It's definitely a cut above shopping at Aldi or Lidl, that's like walking around a car-boot sale.

The website is very good...but I just look at it and think to myself 'what the strawberry float am I supposed to buy?'. I suppose I could choose from the 14,000 different pizzas...

All the supermarkets have got their quirks though; Lidl and Aldi have zero production values whatsoever, and the "German checkout experience" isn't much fun either; Morrisons have this weird "Market street" gimmick, while the store has this knock-off of Sainsbury's vibe to it; Tesco stores can feel like you've stepped back 10 years, and the ever changing multi-buy offers are absurd; Waitrose meanwhile has got things like the Heston's Trying Too Hard Again range, with things like turkey Blancmange covered with sauce à la ethanol, or their Essential avocados...

I'm a Sainsbury's man. We have the pre-paid delivery pass and everything. Plus, if you do have to shop in person, the best one near us is massive, huge aisles, and it's in a povvo area of Sunderland so nobody can afford to shop there. Quiet as anything. :datass:

Aldi supremacy. Once you get used to its (lack of) style they have great food across the continent, lovely bread and great pesto. Plus it's cheap as.

I strawberry floating hate shopping regardless of where I do it so may as well get a decent deal.

The biggest issue I have with both Aldi and Lidl are the checkouts, they are so badly managed.

But don't you like having your shopping thrown at you and being forced to pack it on a shelf at the side after you've paid (and somehow stumbled across there with it)?

The biggest issue is that they don't have self-service checkouts - the greatest advancement in shopping technology of a life time.

Oh yeah and 4/4 times I've bought fruit from aldi it's been mouldy

Asda is 100% the worst though - terrible company, terrible shop.

The only decent sized supermarket near me is Tesco and it's alright I suppose. It's a rather large one and they do have quite a bit of variety but the problem is other people like shopping there and I hate their rotten guts. Clogging up the aisles, standing right in front of the one last thing you want to buy like a strawberry floating brain dead zombie twat, walking incredibly slowly. It's old people really.

Doesn't Lidl basically stock the German equivalent of British brands like McVities and Birdseye rather than cheap knockoffs?

Wish there was a Waitrose around here though, nearest one is in Newcastle :(
Yet our office down in London has its own in-house Waitrose where you can put in an order online and the staff will do the shop for you and you just pick it up on your way out at the end of the day :x
End up getting most of my fresh stuff from Marks & Spencer and the local butcher, only really venture to the Supermarkets for things like HP Sauce and frozen stuff, usually Morrisons or Tesco.

My flat is just round the corner from a waitrose. It's too expensive to consider doing a big shop there, but the free coffee is great. :toot:

Tend to go to Sainsbury's for the most part. Seems like a decent middle-ground for price, variety and quality. If they don't have an item I want I'll go to Tesco, and Tesco also have the odd product I prefer.

I occasionally go to Waitrose, which I do like, but a lot of the time it seems overpriced for the sake of it. Can't only notice a difference in quality very rarely. I don't mind Aldi - to me fruit is fruit regardless of where it's from, so for 'staples' like fruit and veg, frozen fish, tinned tomatoes, pesto etc I'd happily go there.

The problem is I can't be arsed to go to multiple shops. In an ideal world I'd probably get basic fruit and veg from Aldi (which makes up most of my meals) and then other bits from Sainsbury's, along with the odd item from Tesco and Waitrose. For simplicity's/time's sake though I just go to Sainsbury's though, and occasionally one of the others.

Couldn't tell you where the nearest Asda, Morrisons or Lidl is, and I've never stepped foot in an Iceland. M&S food is great, but it would mean going to the high street, which is very out of the way for me/parking isn't great.

I like waitrose because it doesn't strawberry float my mind as much but I used to shop at Sainsbury's for better prices. Now my partner goes wherever.

Aldi and lidl are odd. Btw Aldi are mostly own brand but they have comical look alike packaging so you don't know it.

Asda has the cheapest diesel. They win.
