I made a joke since someone was bound to do it about him. I then in a spoiler box said that as even I know this is horrible. It's really silly how a joke is allowed about the majority of things but if it's anything to do with football it's too far.

No, it really isn't. I have no interest in football at all, and didn't really know who Gary Speed was until today.

It's sometimes difficult to define when it's appropriate to make a joke; when you're getting near to the line, or trampling over it. There are many factors, and it's something you just have to get a feel for. If you're not sure, it's best to keep your mouth shut.

But in this case, it was blindingly obvious.

There are many football fans on here yes so expect a very big wave of sadness when something like this happens, especially to one of the true greats.

Maybe we'll all come jumping on you when one of your jap cartoons dies

People like you should be burned alive.

I was going tempted to go with the obligatory 'RIP in peace', but this isn't a case of someone old/a paedo dying so even that would be going a bit too far.

Really quite shocked by this.
Must have been depression you think.
Wales really did look like they were going places under Speed and with Bale, Ramsey etc. I had hopes that they might qualify for a big tournament.

I tend to agree with Oscar Wilde's school of thought on such matters. His arguement was that the morality of humour totally hinged on if the utterance was funny. If you make somebody laugh when the person 'knows' it is intrinsically wrong to laugh at that moment in time you have succeeded in trumping the recieved morailty of a situation and are a comic genuis. The flipside is misjudging it badly and looking like a banana split.

Staydead, you spam and troll every strawberry floating place on this forum. Keep out of my thread, you have already said your opinion, just shut up now.

Tragic news.

Not normally too upset by deaths of famous people but this one has hit me. So sad, to see him die in such an awful manner, who knows what was going through his head. I read somewhere that he was laughing and joking on Football Focus just yesterday as well. :(

I don't want to speculate too much but you're probably right. It's sad to read how the day before he was laughing and joking, talking about his kids, talking positively about Wales' future, etc and then the next day this. This was the last story i expected to wake up to hear about.

You have to feel for his kids and wife. I'm not sure how old his kids are and whether they understand what's happened, but Christmas for them is going to be beyond difficult to say the least. Again not wanting to speculate because we don't know the real situation and what was really going on in his personal life, but i can't help but wonder he resorted to suicide. I assume he was more than financially stable, so was severe depression? Was his wife planning on leaving?

I think we all, particularly men, try to put a brave face on for other people, even more so when we're depressed.

This is really shocking. From all the comments of all the people who knew him its clear that no one knew he had any problems or issues. This is a real shame, he leaves behind kids and a wife. Very sad.

Wales also were playing some great football under him, he looked like a great manager for the future.

Proper WTF moment when I read the headline earlier.

Real shame, especially with his wife and kids involved as well. Always seemed like a good guy. One of those names that seemed to be around forever as well, during his playing time especially. He had a great career.

Look, people in this country follow & love football. Gary Speed had a career so long nearly all of us have grown up watching him play. He was very popular so people are shocked and sad.

Get it?

Indeed. Immediately afterward - when clearly people are shocked by it is probably not the best time to crack a joke.

I often wonder if you realise that it's partly because of your lack of understanding about this and other aspects of accepted social norms, that you often have problems getting on with and relating to other people.
