Awful news. I'm shocked and very saddened. Watching the Swansea/Villa minutes silence/applause and reading his friends and colleagues words about him brought a tear to my eye. He was a quality footballer, proving to be a real, top class manager and always seemed like a great bloke. RIP. :(

I'd like to request we stop using this thread to discuss what horrible retards StayDead and SugarCubes are, and if necessary, take that to a new thread in The Website instead, so we can use this thread for it's intended design.

Quite difficult to watch towards the end :(

I dislike savage immensely, but this shows everything in a different light, football means jack gooseberry fool really.

So difficult to watch and I feel sorry for him

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

Funny thing but a couple of years ago Savage was like the Joey Barton of his time and was generally disliked....the last year or two has really seen a huge turnaround in his public perception and he is viewed in a much better light now. I think that he is prepared to take the pissout of himself and just now seems to be so laid back and much funnier has probably contributed to this. Quite sad to see him trying to hold it together as he was visibly getting more and more upset...at least the newscaster had the decency to cut it short when he broke down.

Applause is so much better than silence, it's more a celebration of life than the silence of death

I agree, and the fact it was spontaneous and not planned made it even better

I know what you mean but I feel an applause is more apt for say an old guy like Bobby Charlton passing away at an old age and a silence more apt for a tragic loss of a young life.

Not that any of that matters, was nice to see everyone paying tribute today.

I feel the other way. Applaud the young man but show reverence towards the older person. But either way it was a great tribute today.

No idea who he was, but it's sad when someone dies at such a young age.

Seriously upsetting. Each time I'm reminded it makes me well up. Gary must have been suffering for a long time. Suffering silently. I don't know what there is to take out of this.

Hopefully if there's anything good about this at all, is that it will make other people suffering to speak up.

Yes. I hope so. I'm feel really, really torn up by it. Trying to work through depression is agony.

This. I don't know if anyone reads The Secret Footballer on the Guardian, but his article yesterday was about depression and mental illnesses within football. It seems to be such a big thing in football at the moment yet nothing has been done about it. Maybe this, coupled with other incidents in the last few years, such as Robert Enke, will lead to more help being given to those suffering.

Also listening to 606, all the stories people have about Speed are brilliant and incredibly touching. A shame to lose such a great professional and person.

"Suicide is a mix of the most tragic, most selfish, most terrible (and I want to believe preventable) acts out there."

Joey Barton :fp: Throwing "most selfish" in there is horrible.

Probably not the right time to say it but it's a viewpoint and he's free to express it. But he should of waited or at least looked at what he was writing first on the day the world of football is in sadness idiot. A relation of mine committed suicide and certainly at the time I hated the person for doing it, just leaving everything behind seemingly not thinking of the consequences for everyone else. Each to their own, just bad timing.
