Yes. I hope so. I'm feel really, really torn up by it. Trying to work through depression is agony.

This. I don't know if anyone reads The Secret Footballer on the Guardian, but his article yesterday was about depression and mental illnesses within football. It seems to be such a big thing in football at the moment yet nothing has been done about it. Maybe this, coupled with other incidents in the last few years, such as Robert Enke, will lead to more help being given to those suffering.
Also listening to 606, all the stories people have about Speed are brilliant and incredibly touching. A shame to lose such a great professional and person.
Exxy wrote:"Suicide is a mix of the most tragic, most selfish, most terrible (and I want to believe preventable) acts out there."
Joey Barton Throwing "most selfish" in there is horrible.
Probably not the right time to say it but it's a viewpoint and he's free to express it. But he should of waited or at least looked at what he was writing first on the day the world of football is in sadness idiot. A relation of mine committed suicide and certainly at the time I hated the person for doing it, just leaving everything behind seemingly not thinking of the consequences for everyone else. Each to their own, just bad timing.

I dislike savage immensely, but this shows everything in a different light, football means jack gooseberry fool really.
So difficult to watch and I feel sorry for him
Funny thing but a couple of years ago Savage was like the Joey Barton of his time and was generally disliked....the last year or two has really seen a huge turnaround in his public perception and he is viewed in a much better light now. I think that he is prepared to take the pissout of himself and just now seems to be so laid back and much funnier has probably contributed to this. Quite sad to see him trying to hold it together as he was visibly getting more and more upset...at least the newscaster had the decency to cut it short when he broke down.
I wouldn't go that far. Savage off the pitch is a decent guy, he was just a wind up merchant on it.
Barton is a thug off it and on it. Anyway sad news about Gary Speed.

You can't possibly say that without knowing the circumstances behind his suicide. People with serious depression don't appreciate the consequences of their actions.

Assuming that's what's caused this anyway.
I'm not saying he's a bad person or anything, the tragedy is that he was driven to commit such an act, not that the act is selfish or whatever some might say.
The fact he killed himself doesn't make it any less sad to me.
Such sad news. I've been listening to 5 Live on and off for most of the day since about lunchtime, it's been the saddest day of radio I can recall. 6-0-6 was difficult listening at points, but there were some very touching stories. Savage sounded like he was broken. As has been said, for someone of my generation Speed has just always been there in the brickwork of British football. RIP.
Suicide isn't always black and white in terms of selfishness. Say he'd been diagnosed with terminal cancer or Huntington's Chorea - suicide denies his family the end of his life, but also spares them the pain of suffering with him through a long and painful death and lets them remember him at his best. I just hope that whatever reasons he had weren't avoidable or fixable ones like money or job pressure.
I feel similar to Steve - I remember getting his stickers in the Merlin albums when I first fit into football, so even though I had no affinity for him in fan terms I'm still really shaken by the fact we'll never see him again.
Can't begin to think what the family are going through.
Apparently the death wasn't suspicious. I know technically it wasn't if the reports are true, but it seems like a stupid term to apply here as this came as such a shock to everyone. I'm sure we'll find out more in the coming days, and I just strawberry floating hope it isn't over a superinjunction. Whatever the reason, there's clearly more to it than meets the eyes.

I don't think this is true.
Suicide isn't the choice people are making it out to be in this thread. Suicide is perceived as the lack of choice. It is the ultimate consequence of a fatal illness.

And that is pretty sad as well. I dunno but the way this has happened sure makes you think that there are some skeletons in the cupboard. You just know the press and media are going to be all over this. The guy is dead and nothing will change that and we, the general public, really don't need to know anymore than that and surely all the other details are facts that concern just for his kids and family.

So true. Guess it's the price of round the clock news.
Secondly,if people dont understand the effects of depression they should just shut the strawberry float up. Depression is a soul destroying illness and its incredibly difficult to shake.
Nobody knows me on here so i'll admit that i'm on medication for depression, but thats after suffering for years due to being too embarrassed to say anything. Once you start seriously considering suicide though, its time to see your doctor.
My life aint perfect but I have a beautiful wife and gorgeous kids, even though I love them more than anything i've still thought about suicide. I think of ways I could do it without t looking like suicide(so as the insurance would pay out). The fact is it doesn't matter who the strawberry float you are, depression is depression and the sadness can be truely unbearable.
The poor guy has in no way been selfish,he has seen it as a last resort because thats exactly what it is,a last resort.
If any of you guys think you might be suffering from depression then PLEASE seek advice from your G.P. Its nothing to be embarrassed about and some of the prescription drugs are pretty, pretty good:-)
It can often be something pretty trivial that makes you feel better about being alive. For me(as well as the bairns obviously)its videogames(seriously) that cheer me up. Not even so much playing them its just the thought of great games and machines coming out in the future that make me smile. Strange I know, but its the simple things in life eh.
Once again sorry about garry, and curb the ignorance guys for strawberry float sake. Not everything is black and white, nor is everything up for instajokes.
R.I.P. A truly sad loss. Think Jeremy Vine put it best:

That is a far more accurate picture. It's very dismissive to describe it as a selfish act.
