I'm just hoping other studios don't decide to do this with other franchises like the James Bond series.

Like people have said, the only thing that a tactic like this is really going to accomplish is encouraging piracy. Want to buy a Harry Potter film but the DVD/Blu-Ray is out of stock everywhere? What are you going to do? Pay twice as much as you would for a Blu-Ray in order to get a SD quality copy from iTunes? Or pirate a HD copy? The vast majority of internet-savy users will likely fall into the latter category.

Until Digital Distribution is actually worthwhile (aka - Costs less than getting a version that's had packaging costs, transport costs and retail outlet profit margins added to the pricee) then a move like this is only going to harm the film industry, not help it.
