I am so old that the top mark we could get was just an A, none of this A* rubbish. 8-)

Ooo check out fancy pants Jawa. In my day we finished school aged 8 and went to work in the mines and died before our 10th birthday like decent working class folks should.

They just phone up the university registry, they have whole departments for this stuff.

I doubt the HR department in my company would be capable of thinking to do that.

I only really bothered revising for Science, maths and history and spent most of my study break playing GTA and Tekken 2, still managed to get reasonably good results despite my utter laziness.

I somehow got an A for RE  but only got B in science instead of the projected A, my worst result was an F for IT which was due to all my coursework going missing (the exam was only worth about 30% of the final marks).

I didn't take GCSEs that seriously at all and I ended up with 6 As, 1 B and 3 Cs. Just about the only thing I ever did well at as it was all downhill from there, 2 gooseberry fool A levels followed by dropping out of Uni :D

I cared about my GCSE results but at the same time I wasn't losing sleep over them. I needed certain grades to get into the Advanced GNVQ and the A Level that I wanted to do and so it was a relief that I got what I wanted.

Of course I then dropped out of college after a year and got a job instead.

Got 6 Bs and 3 Cs. Should have had 3 As but strawberry floated up on my coursework rather than the exams so it dragged it down.

Not sure what the difference is between GCSE and A levels but I presume you guys are talking about the end of secondary school exams (leaving cert exam in Ireland).

My best subject was technical drawing which I got an A- in. The rest were low Bs and Cs and I even got a D in Maths which I very nearly failed. 13 years later and I'm an English teacher in South America who hasn't drawn anything since leaving school in 2002. So yeah, they haven't really factored into my life since the day I picked up the results.

I got a B+ in Art, all the rest were C's, except for Maths which was a D.

I keep meaning to go back and do Maths again. It was my least favourite subject, but I probably wouldn't be able to get a job in McDonalds without it.

I didn't really care all that much. I wanted to do well but banked on the questions being based on things I was naturally good at and my short term memory, revising only in the car on the morning of whatever exam I was doing. Ended up with three A's, two B's and the rest C's which I was happy with, not that they have ever seemed to matter since leaving.

I did pretty well at GCSEs and A-Levels, but I did get a 2.ii. in my degree, which was hard at the time because you're entombed in this horrible echo chamber where everyone is screaming "Oh God, I hope I scrape my 2.i., I don't know what I'll do if I don't!" ad infinitum.

While certainly I've had opportunities with my decent school exams that I might not have had otherwise, and likewise I'm sure in certain ways my life could have been a bit easier with a 2.i., the idea that a bad exam result can bring your world crashing down is pretty obnoxious. Children in particular shouldn't be made to believe this; it's both untrue and piles on excessive levels of pressure and stress.

I was lazy as strawberry float all through school and most of my first college course so I know if I'd applied myself as I did in my second college course then I would have done much better in general. As you say, telling kids that this is their only shot is just trying to scare them into giving a toss about something which is just the first step in a long process.

viewed my GCSEs as a stepping stone. didnt care particularly for revision. 4*, 5A and a B got me along well (though not revising set me up for a shock at AS when I got an A and 2 Bs, when I needed straight As (and got them at A2)). I was asked for grades and exam board as part of my job screening this year (sat in 2009) so assume I could have been asked for proof if they weren't verified.

Is it true that GCSE results expire after about 7 years or so?

Of course not.
The relevance of them might be questioned after a long time period, and I would say my French is probably not to GCSE A grade standard after 15 years, but the result still stands.

At the time I cared as I wanted to be a primary teacher, o reasonably well but when I learned I could get the same grades in classes in sixth form by just reading text books and not going in I got booted out for attendance despite course work and grades being fine.

I ended up falling into IT and it has worked out pretty well regardless. I'm one of the more technical and higher paid in our small organisation and the only one to have not done a levels and uni.
