Half the time the pressure of life or death if you fail is because the school require X number of good grades to retain a decent level of funding... It's no wonder half of the current generation are depressed to strawberry float as a result...

Only GCSEs that even matter are maths and English and that's only to a C grade level anyway... Might even be less nowadays...

Things must have changed a bit. I had to show my actual exam certificates when I started my first two jobs. But that was in olden times i.e. GCE / CSE rather than GCSE.

Still pissed that I only got a 2 for Computer Studies. I programmed a few games on my C64 and my teacher, who was only interested in the BBC computers, blatantly didn't give a flip about my stuff. Not that I still harbour the grudge thirty years later :x  .

Tl;dr I didn't pass my computing exam because of format wars.

You think that’s bad? Photek lost out on a pHD because Gamerforever was marking his work and took offence at an essay entitled “why Xbox One is THE BEST EVER!!!!”.

I was (am) really lazy and didn't care that much. Got a ton of ds. Oh well, I'm going to start teacher training next month.

I think it's understandable at their age for them to be excited – some of them will genuinely believe that GCSEs are the be all and end all of life and that you can’t get anywhere without them as that is what will have been instilled into them by teachers and/or parents. It's just scare tactics. As you get older you realise that line of thinking is total nonsense. In my experience GCSE are generally only a requirement to get into certain college courses and later university if that's your preferred route in life.

I got an E in Java. strawberry float Java.

No wait that was a levels.

My GCSEs were mint, but I believe I must wanted to do well and other motivations were weird and mixed up. I did plenty of things under my own steam but I depend heavily on mentorship for clarity and confidence so school was probably a good thing. Dunno lol. I got into booze and parties just before it was too late.

I used to care about my GCSEs, but stopped after I was informed by my teacher that they stop meaning anything (essentially expiring) after about 7 years after you take them.

Most jobs care more about university degrees, experience and a good reference anyway.

I cared about them as a vector to get into college, but now I can't really remember what I got, and nobody has ever asked.

That was a CSE, graded 1-5. A 1 was equivalent to a pass at GCE ( a 'c'). I messed up on all my GCEs due to a combination of couldn't be bothered and not knowing how to revise. With the exception of computing which I was double entered on, getting a C/B at GCE (C for exam, B for project) and 1 for CSE.

Yes?

Death's Head knows. CSE crew unite!

Kinda related to this topic... I've been "helping" one of my nephews practice for his 11+ exam in September. Man, some bits of the maths test are actually pretty challenging  . It's proving to be practice for me, too :toot: .

Honest to God I can't even do long multiplication or division anymore.

Neither can I remember pythagoras or trigonometry.

strawberry float I can barely do fractions.

I got a B. Google calculator, man.

I guess you at least learn how to actually do sums and logic. The bedrock of numeracy - that's hard to forget
