GCSEs to get into college, A-levels to get into Uni, and a degree to get into a job. And then your degree ceases all importance as employment history usurps it.

Unless you want to go into a very specific field you're probably better off getting an entry level job, working your way up and earning some money in the meantime instead of racking up years of debt.

I was in Russia when my results came in, and it didn't feel like a big deal because I couldn't get in touch with my parents to tell them for days after so there was no 'that's good' or anything. By the time I got home, the moment had passed. It was generally a bit of a damp squib.

I cared much more about my GCSE results than my A-levels, despite the latter having a far greater impact on my actual life. But that's the way the school system drills into you just how vital it is to succeed at that point. Whereas for my A level results, we had predicted grades and a lot of the eventual result was determined by coursework, the scores for which we'd already received.

Of note in this thread is how far we've come as a forum. Karl's position as established overlord adult is now widely respected to the point that no one in the past few years has asked him for his GCSE results.

It's 25 years since i did my GCSEs

I genuinely can't remember what subjects I did, or even how many - ten? I know I got straight 'A's though (A* wasn't a thing back then). I doubt I gave much of a fool about them given my approach to school at the time, but I know I was sure I wanted to go and do my 'A' levels rather than get a job.

I wonder if I would have been so certain nowadays? The days of 'get a degree, get a job' have long since gone, so probably not as sure a path now as it was then.

All I remember about my GCSE results is getting two As for Science and being pissed off that my school didn't offer the triple science GCSE or any IT related GCSE.
Once I got my A-levels they were rendered pointless anyway, and those were rendered pointless when I got my Bachelors and Masters degrees. My CV only has my University education on, Secondary School and College seem like a waste of space when CVs already need to be kept succinct.

I literally got put on intermediate tier for everything based on my SATS results from when I was in year 6. I practised in all the higher papers for GSCE and never had a single issue. I asked the school to put me on a higher tier and they said I'd have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to do so.
