PostWe are recreating some threads
by Karl » Fri May 25, 2018 8:15 pm

Hi all,

Our forum software, PhpBB, has trouble with 1. very long threads and 2. very large databases. (Bear in mind that even a hundred pages in a thread, or a hundred thousand posts in a database, is very long / large by most Internet message board standards!) Increasingly, long threads are actually breaking, taking you to entirely the wrong posts when you try to read them.

We can't do anything about point 2 -- we have a lot of posts and that's that. We can try to fix point 1.

Firstly, we are recreating many threads that are too long. I think we need to just rip off the band-aid and get this done as quickly as possible so that the forum can return to normal. But it's a good opportunity to make sure all of our long-standing threads have active authors and informative opening posts. If you would like ownership of a recreated thread, because you want to update the OP, just say so.

Secondly, I'd like to suggest that threads don't run too far over 100 pages in future. I am not making this a rule. I am just encouraging thread authors to recreate their threads at some time that is convenient to them once their thread reaches a triple-digit page count.

I will leave this thread open both for discussion and as a venue in which you can request ownership of threads.

All the best,
Karl

RE: The around-100-page advice - will this run the same for seasonal threads such as wrestling or football? It might be a little difficult to find a breaking off point for such things and the current guidelines seem to work quite well I think.

Well 100 pages isn't a hard and fast rule. I guess it's just a case of best judgement. If a thread is at say 90 pages right before the start of a season or big event, it may be best to start a new thread.
On the other hand, if it hits 120 pages halfway through the season or event I don't think it'll be too much of a problem to keep going, just take the next opportunity to make the clean break.

I would think they would run for a season however it may be worth splitting out say football to UK and Scottish or different leagues or tournaments or however the strawberry float it works to keep pages down and maybe make it easier to track what's going on.

Is that why sometimes when I click to see first unread post, it's been taking me a couple of pages back from where I wanted to be?

Yes, it's been a bug on some of the huger threads recently and restarting threads is a better option than spending ages trying to track down the causes of the problems.

Interestingly, the professional website man on onm under Future used to tell us to kill threads at around 100 pages. I’ve always liked phpBB (and still prefer it over newer Reddit style forums) so it’s all good by me.

Due to databases and indexing and blah, it's generally a good practice to maintain shorter threads. Also, the vast majority of forums straight up automatically delete everything after a set amount of time, say, 30 to 90 days.

We have maintained every single thread for the past 10 years  which is strawberry floating mental by optimisation standards. Across multiple servers and hosting environments as well. I know because I've done it at least twice. It's not fun, but we feel it's important. And thankfully, our dedicated server (and Karl's current configuration) is up to the task.

I always wondered why the new posts button seemed completely broken on some threads.

100 pages is perffectly acceptable I would say. Most forums I've been on that use phpbb cap at that. Even seasonal threads. There's no reason not to just make a new thread for the football season, because honestly when do you ever go back and read the old posts anyway?

I said this when we had the last discussion about this. Football threads could be split into calendar months and a link to the old thread made. Potentially the first page could be the last page of the old thread after a synoptic OP? Ditto the wrestling thread (not that I check there often) - there are a number of major PPVs every year. The week before Royal Rumble, Mania, Survivor Series etc, the thread gets recreated.

While we're at it, I don't know if we need separate football threads anymore. Neither thread is that busy.

Can we quarantine the footballers off in their own forum?

I don't see how this should be a problem.

Could we at least add a link to the previous thread in the OP?
