Criminals serving Community Service will have to
wear orange bibs, says Jack Straw

Image

In an exclusive interview, Justice Secretary Jack Straw revealed he is making it compulsory to put wrong-doers into “vests of shame” from next week.

He is pressing ahead despite fears Guantanamo-style outfits will humiliate the wearers. A total of 10,000 high- visibility tabards with “community payback” emblazoned across the back have been ordered by the Ministry of Justice. The words are in purple and there will also be a “community payback” logo on the front. The uniforms will become a common sight as offenders wear them while doing manual labour on Britain’s streets.

Probation officers are expected to attack the move as demeaning to offenders and dangerous as they could lead to attacks. But Government Respect Tsar Louise Casey who has headed a major inquiry into restoring public confidence in the criminal justice system said it was time to make sentences tougher. Sitting alongside Mr Straw, she said: “What is important is that people who break the law face a consequence and that isn’t pleasant." Ms Casey added that as well as pushing offenders it would also deter other youngsters from carrying out crimes. She tells a story of how in a trial scheme in Birmingham, offenders were made to clean toilets in a community centre. “One of the kids said ‘The last thing I want to do is clean those toilets. I think I’ll steer clear of trouble. This is why visibility is so important.”

Mr Straw also said reforming community sentences would have a big impact on jail overcrowding.

More evidence of the Dear Leader's new 'vision for a fairer Britain' or just cheaper than funding those 'Titan' jails so often promised as a panacea to prison overcrowding? :fp:

Should be pink, those just look like any old workman's jacket, most people won't even give them a second glance.

Yeah, right. A kiddie criminal in Birmingham really said that. Really used the word "those" before toilets, rather than "them". Really said those last two sentences. Honest.

What utter lies.

I do support the concept of these vests, although I'd like more humiliating stuff to be written on them.

Jack Straw looks deadly serious!

it should be a funky colour that has people stop and staring like pink or blue.

It's not exactly a bad idea, is it? And if it actually works, then it's fair play.

I like the way the story is about how community service (i.e. bog cleaning) was what she didn't want to do, not that she just didn't want to do it in a vest.

But "This is why visibility is so important."...

They are borderline northern so they would probably just miss out the words that join the sentence.

"Last thing I want to do is clean, toilet".

To be honest I think it's a good idea. The reason places like Japan have lower crime is because they have a stronger sense of shame. When they've wronged they feel like they've betrayed their whole society and they genuinely feel terrible for it.

In this country full of selfish, ignorant, uneducated, ungrateful peasants with no regard for life, law or property your average offender isn't going to give two gooseberry fools about how his actions are taken by the community at large or their effects.

Maybe walking down the street knowing that all the passers-by know they're criminals - feeling a sense of shame perhaps for the first time - might actually work.

Or it might just become a badge of honour like ASBOs. In which case let's just machine-gun these strawberry floaters into a great strawberry floating hole as they are nothing more than a liability to the entire human race.

I think that's a typo in the quote. It sounds like the person retelling the story is just offering her opinion on the child's quote.

And it's a good job they weren't from Blackburn. The scallies from round there can't even pronounce a simple word properly. It sounds like cavemen are trying to communicate.

"Cleyn fuckn bog? Ugh"

It's not a bad idea but it's really not going to work.

How many more pages of "They're all scum, hang them!" are we going to have BTW? I feel at least five more coming up.

I propose compulsory hysterectomies and vasectomies for any irresponsible parent who has at least one child to prevent them ever making any more.

And they can't adopt or have a child by artificial means unless they can prove they are a gay couple.

There's nothing demeaning about 'them vests' whatsoever. All they've done is replace Railway Engineer with Community Payback. Unless you're paying attention, you're just going to think they're a road sweeper or something.

It's far less demeaning than being raped in a prison shower.
