i wrote:Britain has the unhealthiest diet in Europe – significantly increasing the risk of obesity, heart attacks and strokes, an alarming new study finds.

Ultra-processed ‘junk’ food such as crisps, chicken nuggets and poor-quality ready-made meals now make up just over half of the meals consumed in the average household. These contain little, if any, unadulterated food.

Britain’s consumption of these foods is five times as high as it is in Portugal and nearly four times as great as in France, Greece and Italy, researchers found in a study of 19 European countries. Germany and Ireland were the next biggest consumers of ultra-processed foods, which made up around 46 per cent of their average diet – with most of the rest of Europe eating considerably less junk food.

Big problem for Britain Professor Carlos Monteiro of Sao Paulo University, who led the study, said Britain’s poor diet posed a “serious problem” for the nation – with growing obesity a particular concern, he warned. Prof Monteiro said governments should take action to increase the consumption of food that involves little or no processing, for example by putting health warnings on the packets. They should make ultra-processed foods “less available and affordable” – for example through extra taxes.

“The British diet in general is a public health disaster zone. We have a terrible problem with diet-related ill health,” said Tim Lang, Professor of food policy at City University, who wasn’t involved in the research.

The study also found that Britain is the most obese of the 19 nations examined and concluded that there is a “significant positive assocation” between eating ultra-processed food and being severely overweight. Increasing the proportion of your diet made up of ultra-processed food by 1 per cent pushed up your chance of obesity by 0.25 per cent. This connection almost entirely explains the differing obesity rates in the UK and Portugal – which are 24.5 per cent and 15.2 per cent, respectively, the study finds.

Increased risk of strokes

Victoria Taylor, Senior Dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: “The problem with ultra-processed foods is that they are high in saturated fat, salt and sugars. Too much of these can seriously impact our health, putting us at greater risk of heart attack and stroke. “As a nation, we should be making a greater effort to eat less of these types of processed foods, like sweet treats, chocolate and sugary drinks,” she added. A well-balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg, wholegrains, fish, beans and pulses, will help us protect ours and our families’ hearts, Ms Taylor said.

Unprocessed or minimally processed foods, such as fruit and vegetables or a leg of lamb make up 28.6 per cent of the average UK diet and processed foods such as salami, bread and cheese make up a further 10 per cent. Sugar, oils, fats and salts used to season unprocessed or minimally-processed dishes comprise another 10 per cent with junk food making up the rest, according to the study, published in the journal Public Health Nutrition.

I had some low salt, low sugar baked beans yesterday. They were rubbish. So I put the salt back in. :datass:

I know it's an easy escaped goat, but is there actually anything wrong with a box of 20 chicken nuggets? They're extremely high in protein, low in saturated fat, low in sugar, high in calories, moderate amounts of salt, whole chicken breast...

There's a gym close by to a McDonald's near me and it's not uncommon to see BUFF GEEZERS in there murdering a box.

I'm not surprised. There are so many fat people here in Southend.

I definitely think we're getting fatter as a nation, but we still seem to have far fewer REALLY huge people compared to the USA.

I think 20 nuggets is a tad excessive but no, generally speaking, decent quality chicken nuggets aren't actually that unhealthy aside from being deep fried which again isn't necessarily as bad as people think provided that any excess oil is drained off.

The real reason people get fat is simply because they consume more calories than they need - "you are what you eat" is mostly a load of nonsense.

Thing is, you can bombard people as much as you like with messages on cutting down sugar, eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, doing more exercise, etc, but ultimately people just don't seem to care. In that case, what can you do? Part of it comes down to education and understanding, but that only goes so far, and you can only tell people so many times that their lifestyle and/or diet isn't good for them. If they don't want to change, they won't.

We should really spend our extra £350m a week Brexit money on a new Fat Police Force that patrols the streets of the UK (but not Scotland, land of the Irn-Bru and deep fried Mars bar, a truly forsaken place), arresting any fatties unless they can show their Slimming World membership papers - which must be up to date! They must also submit to a thorough cavity search, where the officers check their teeth for holes.

Come to Southend, we've got really huge people. Quite a few seem pretty young but drive around on mobility scooters.
