Well that was a good episode.

I end up on the edge of my seat, urging the Man in Black to say who he was...

... aw, come on!

Anyway this has rapidly become one of my favourite TV shows.

I loved the explanation of why the hosts memories feel real to them and the discussion about whether or not their emotions are real.

I think we've been watching at least 4 different time periods now - the early days of the park when the white church was still there and the Arnold stuff happens, 5 years after the park opened when William first visits and the company he's marrying into is about to buy the park, 29 years after William's first visit when he returns as MiB after his wife died (maybe now head of the board of the company that owns the park?) and that's when he first finds out about the maze, and lastly another year later when all the current events are happening. Poor Dolores is getting completely confused with all the past memories playing out as lifelike daydreams!

Another theory:
Bernard is a host version of Arnold built by Ford after Arnold dies. I think we've seen flashbacks to the real Arnold (who we mistake for Bernard) secretly questioning Dolores, giving her books to read etc - generally encouraging her on a path to consciousness. In these scenes she's also fully clothed, and we know that's not how they do things in the present day park (Ford makes a point of this in one episode). All of the host stories are grounded in truth according to Ford, so in Bernard's case perhaps Arnold a child for real and that pushed Arnold to try to develop fully conscious hosts with free will, and the maze was created to be a test or a journey of self discovery for the hosts.

I am loving this show! I have no idea where the end goal is.

I think that the idiot repair dudes are probably Bots too and are programmed to help Maeve escape because otherwise their actions are really dumb!

The asian guy seems to be motivated by a mixture of compassion and fear, plus wanting to prove his programming skills at first (see his attempts to bring the little robot bird back to life too). The white guy appears driven only by fear, she has to keep threatening him to get him on board (his career and his life). When she has a stab at killing him I did wonder if maybe she somehow realised he's a host while he was bleeding out, her facial expression changes dramatically and then she quickly orders the asian guy to heal him...but it probably would've been a bad idea to start killing staff at that point too.

If Maeve gets out she could end up being used by the board - she'd be carrying host data out of the park and out of Ford's reach. Perhaps they had a hand in the code changes that initially put her in this position.

Maybe Elsie will return in host form, Ford (speaking through Bernard) is sticking with the story that she's on holiday and he's still building a host in secret. It's obviously not going to be a Theresa replacement now that they've retrieved her body.

There's some possibility to that. One thing I noticed:
Looking back at one of the scenes where he's talking to Dolores, it's very similar (But not quite identical) to the room where Bernard killed Theresa. Possibly the same room, but from a different timeline.

Loved that episode.
Hopkins was icily cold and yet so smooth and assured in his malice. Brilliant. His throwaway, glib chat describing his motivations/actions (and ergo Bernard's) was just beautifully delivered.

Some superb performances in this. Newton's especially. The whole thing of this - the cast, the slow build up, the aesthetics and the music. All have combined to produce a top quality piece of TV. strawberry floating marvellous.

Thoughts on the various theories later. Too tired now.

Some more thoughts today!
Elsie was in an abandoned theatre when she got attacked by Bernard, and there are costumes around her that remind me of the kind of stuff Wyatt's men wear - I wonder if Ford re-purposed costumes from the old theatre for his new narrative. There's a pretty visible one with horns behind her at one point.

I've also been wondering if Maeve is part of Ford's new narrative too - has he built this new narrative especially for MIB/William? Incorporating hosts from MIB's past in the park like Lawrence, the host that greeted him on his first visit, and maybe Maeve as well? Is he orchestrating it to set her up to kill MIB? To remove the man who may be his biggest adversary on the board, without any suspicion falling on him?

Episode 9 spoilers:
Multiple time periods confirmed, Bernard = host Arnold confirmed! :toot:

MIB = William is even more obvious now too.

One more theory: Dolores = Wyatt! Teddy's memories of the soldiers he shot changing to townsfolk points to it being the same town with the white church where we saw Dolores remembering gunning down hosts...

1x09-

Confirmation on William = MiB:
-The photo of Logan's sister in Times Square is the old photo Abernathy found on his farm.

Great episode though it is somewhat sad that pretty much every twist has been guessed so early on. I hope that's not the last we see of Jeffrey Wright.

Holy strawberry floating gooseberry fool! My mind is blown after that episode. Amazing stuff!

Or have I read that completely wrong? If so, how many strawberry floating timelines are there? Somebody lay all this gooseberry fool out in a graph, please.

I think it goes like this:

1. Earliest time period (Alice in Wonderland dress)- The church hasn't been buried yet. Dolores goes in to the underground lab and sees Ford. Maybe this is when she kills Arnold but we just haven't seen that bit yet.
2. William's first trip to the park (Cowgirl outfit)- The church is buried in sand and Dolores has already killed Arnold.
3. Present day (Cowgirl outfit)- After we last saw it with Ford and Bernard earlier in the season, Ford has dug up the church. Dolores goes in and finds the lab wrecked with a load of corpses. She comes back up in the elevator and runs into MiB.

The confusion arises because Dolores is forgetting which time period she's currently in. I think in the present day she's unintentionally repeating the journey with William including wearing the same clothes.

It's just stupendous. That slow build and then boom. Hopkins, Wright, Newton take a strawberry floating bow.
Ed Harris - mint!

Just an absolute pleasure to watch and then rewatch and then dissect.

I don't get how Bernard is Arnold. Why would no one recognize him in the present day?
Surely Arnold's identity wouldn't be a mystery, he was the co founder of the park.

I think he died before the park opened, it was over 30 years ago, and Ford likely did everything he could to keep his identity a secret.

I find Thandie Newton is great in some scenex but over acts in others. Also find her character's behavior confusing, especially after the last episode. Why would she make love to the other host, black hat villain guy if she's aware her feelings are just programmed, why would she care if everything is a lie. Surely convincing him to help her in her plan was enough, why would they both then strawberry float each other? Even if they do still 'care' and indulge their intimate programmed feelings, the way they presented it just seemed the show creators just did it for the sake of having some romantic scene.
