Ive been away a few days with work and ive come to realise that i just cannot shut up when I'm in a group of people. Any sort of silence and I've got to fill it with anything to break it, no matter how irrelevant :dread:

The moment of clarity came when we were out in the evening and sat around a big table - an awkward pause happened and my brain decided it couldn't cope and decided to save the day. I was just rambling utter shite, which I managed to turn in to a funny annicdote which got a big laugh.

So I kept going and going, I could see people dying inside, another story ended in silence. :dread:

I can't remember what it was I said, but the final nail in the coffin was along these lines:

By the way this group included my boss :fp:

Tl:dr I cant shut the strawberry float up when a group goes silent

I don't realise they were awkward until approximately 5 years after they've occurred, at which point this happens.

I enjoy the silence so I'm the cause

The same way I act in general social situations: awkwardly.

I’m very quiet around people I don’t know (in real life!).

I’d imagine a meeting between me and Ad7 would be me sat there quietly while he makes increasingly cringeworthy jokes.

Oh god I'm cringing now just thinking about it.

I’m happy to chat away if the situation demands it but I’m equally happy to sit in silence.

I find silences awkward but not enough to butt in with some terrible verbal diarrhoea. All social situations are a bit awkward for me, even hanging out with people I've known for years sometimes, so I've learned to just kinda get on with it.

I hate awkward silences as much as anyone, but I hate filling them with inane waffle even more.

I'm usually quite quiet, and I don't really mind it. I'm happy to listen and enjoy the conversation and add to it when I feel I can add to it. If there is a lull in conversation I don't really mind. I somewhat envy people who can just talk and talk, but usually I find it a bit irritating. Especially if they are one of those people who talk and talk until they get their laugh.

I found it difficult when I moved to Italy, and went to some expat events. My gf is very much an extrovert and can easily chat away about anything, whereas I struggle with small talk as I simply am not interested the majority of the time. So when I was talking to some random person and it went quiet, I'd just say "well, nice to meet you" and walk off.

I tend to make a joke along the lines of "oop, best keep talking or we'll have an awkward silence hahaha." Works every time.

Black cabs annoy me for this. Because no matter how long your day has been, no matter how tired you are, you just know you're going to be bombarded with CHAT rather than silence. Sometimes the moment your feet touch the cab floor, it's 'alright guvnor' like some cockney gangster movie and that's it. You know you're going to be talking for the next 90 years sat in this strawberry floating car not going anywhere.

This is in stark contrast to a mini cab, where not only are they cheaper, the drivers are normally asian and only speak when spoken to (Yes I know, 'THE RAJ', etc...)

i used to sometimes find myself in these situations or be party to someone else making things awkward but a few years ago i realised i didnt give a gooseberry fool and now i actively enjoy conversation no matter how bad it gets because sometimes you can see the other person/s getting awkward or overthinking something and/or it makes me laugh (internally, i dont start chuckling to myself like a mental :dread: )
this makes me sound like awful company but im not i promise :slol:

Yeah I usually step in as well. I'd be quite happy sitting in silence. But potentially, people might be thinking I'm a serial killer if I just sit there and say nothing.

So I usually talk about random shite to throw them off the scent.
