Buy beans and a grinder.

A grinder does make the most difference to the espresso you can make. Still, you can make it work with caffetiere coffee (use more then 14g, tamp hard) or buy coffee from Whittards/a decent indie coffee shop and have them grind the beans to espresso grind (this is what I did before I had my grinder). If you do buy ground, keep it in the freezer - oxygen gets to it much quicker ground then in bean form.

Yeah you can. Just look for Illy or another good brand of coffee at the supermarket. Espresso coffee is ground finer, so you can't use it with a French Press or you'll end up with sludge. French Press coffee also can't be used with an espresso machine as it's too coarse.

Or buy beans and a grinder, you'll need a burr grinder though, not a rotary blender type. Cheap rotary grinders are good for nothing but grinding spices. You could probably do French Press coffee with one but espresso is too fine.

I don't really like coffee all that much. I do love a mug of English Breakfast tea though. PG Tips

In terms of actual tea a good quality Assam or Oolong. If you're talking about supermarket quality:

Anyone know of any good places in London to buy coffee beans? I'm thinking something a bit unique/speciality, like a coffee roaster's shop or something, not just a supermarket or Starbucks, etc.

Workshop Cafe on Clerkenwell Rd sells their beans. They roast them on the premises too.

http://www.monmouthcoffee.co.uk/ the coffee in here is really really tasty, I've only been in their shop at Borough Market - but I think the beans they sell have been roasted at their other shop in Bermondsey.

Addicted to Starbucks Chai Tea Latte. The Costa one is ok but not as strong.
The Nero one is awful and weak. Literally had to throw it away lol.

Tried www.pactcoffee.com for the first time (£1 with the code: EMPIRE). Coffee tastes great. In fact it tastes excellent. Can't fault the delivery speed either as it arrived the next day. The regular £7 asking price for 250g however works out very expensive when compared to the supermarket premium (454g at Sainsbury's for £6).

Square mile roasters. They'll deliver to you - it's as fresh as it gets. Or check their website for a local shop near you that they supply.

Cheers for this, just ordered my trial bag.

Compared to other brewers that deliver to the door the price isn't too expensive, especially with free shipping. I'm currently buying Square Mile coffee from a local shop and that's £9/£10 a bag (350g) and my local indie shops roast is £7 for 250g - but obviously you have to go collect it from the city centre.

Ordered and then cancelled the day it was delivered. Nice coffee but I couldn't justify spending £7 on a bag every two weeks. I just don't drink it that often.

They had some Illy stuff on offer in Tesco, it's pretty good. The machine is at work, so there's no way I'm buying a grinder and stuff to leave there. And it's for cappuccinos anyway. I'll look into that stuff when I get a decent machine for myself, for black coffee.

Amazing coffee bean deli in Old Compton Street - been there for 30 years...worth checking out.
