Hypothetical question since the self proclaimed most anticipated game of all time is out next week (Ocarina of Time doesn't exist in Bobby Kotick's world  ).

COD sells bucket loads every year, always reviews well for some reason and is going to reach a point where the franchise is worth more than the GDP of most countries. Now let's say it absolutely tanks next week, gets atrocious reviews, no one buys it and those that do end up taking it back inside of a week. What sort of a knock on effect does that have on the rest of the industry? Do companies decide to move away from those kinds of games in fear of the bottom having fallen out of the market or do we see a rash of games suddenly appear to try and usurp COD's throne?

Haven't IW parted ways with Activision, hence there being a chance that it won't be that good...?

What does "good" have to do with "sales"?

Very little, in Kotick's mind. He sees video games as being like any other commodity, like washing powder. Fundamentally very similar stuff... just change the packaging now and again, and claim to be "better than the leading brand" and you'll sell plenty to idiots.

Fair play to him, he's done well on that belief.

Its not really going to flop...however it could well sell under expectations.

Anyway, with Battlefield 3 selling over 5 million in under a week don't expect anything other than a rash of clones.

Wishful thinking.

But let's say it flopped, Bobby Kotick will find other franchise to "ruin."

Is it wrong that I'm looking forward to MW3? :shifty:

I skipped Black Ops and haven't felt like I've missed out on anything, so I'm not overly excited or hyped (at all) for MW3.

But then my interest in shooters in general has been on the wane for some time now, despite the fact the genre used to be my favourite. Woe is me.

I never bothered with both World At War or Black Ops, but I always look forward to the next MW game.

Would it help if I said that I'm going to pick it up on preowned next year? Bobby Kotick isn't getting my money. After reading some disappointing feedback on the single player of Battlefield 3 (I have no interest in multiplayer.)

But then the single player of Black Ops is so woeful. It depends on the general feedback on those forums.

There is no way I'm paying full whack and make Kotick richer. Especially on a game that's developed by a broken development team.

I'm not getting it for the first time I might add, but EVERYONE else is! :fp:

I'm not a fan of dying repeatedly then even more once the glitches start!

I thought the single player of MW1 was superb and the story was excellent. I felt MW2's single player was woeful and the game survived mainly on the multiplayer. Since then I think better online shooters have come out so Modern Warfare 3 needs to be something special to keep the market share. Can't say I am confident the single player will stand up though.

I'm getting it. 8-) Played it at Gamefest, the 'horde' mode I played was entertaining. The graphics look like they've been upgraded, and I'm confident the MP glitches that marred MW2 won't be here. Black Ops' MP mode was pretty well balanced, so I'm hoping for more of the same. Not really buying it for the SP mode, if it's good it'll be a bonus.

As for sticking it to Kotick, I'll tafload the PC version. That'll learn the strawberry floater.

It will sell well, but not as many numbers as last time.

The start of it's decline.

I thought that would be the case last year. I don't think it'll happen though, judging by the reaction I saw to the game.

It doesn't need to be that good in order to sell.

No.
Even though there was no single moment in MW2 as good as All Ghillied Up or the nuke explosion in MW1 overall the singleplayer game flowed a lot better with much less of a reliance on spawning enemies and the levels in general were better. If they can achieve a similar level of improvement for MW3 it should be a good experience.

I don't think we'll see any massive decline in Call of Dutys success until the next-gen to be honest. Too many studios are trying to match Call of Dutys formula now instead of attempting something new. If you look back to before MW came out every other FPS wanted to be Halo but it was by going a different route that MW was so successful because IW knew they couldn't out Halo Bungie. The same thing needs to happen for their to be a dramatic shift away from Call of Duty.

That is the old Infinity Wards.

I reckon that spawning enemies will return in MW3. If it isn't, I'll kiss Chalky's bald head and upload a picture to the forum.*

*Disclaimer: This will not be honored, so don't get any ideas.

Huh?

The Call of Duty games have always followed the same formula, irrespective of what Bungie did with Halo. It's laughable to suggest that the COD games have evolved the way they have today, because IW knew they couldn't beat Halo.
