It starts at 0:25 in this song (embedded vid spoilered below)

Pretty sure it's used right at the start of this song too

Can any clever music types help me figure this one out?

I'm not an expert. But they sound like slightly different things to me. The first sounds like maybe some kind of keyboard/organ synth work. Sounds like it has two parts "layering". The first time I listened I thought it something like an accordion maybe in reverse.

Lewis could be right about a Theremin, or something mimicking one. Certainly for the second one.

I'd say the first sounds like an accordion or two, but recorded or effects added to make it sound slightly distant or outside, some reverb effect or something.

The second sounds like a monophonic synth, (my keyboards have many similar sounds to this) with 'portamento' set which means when you play different notes the synth 'slides' between them - you can set how quickly this happens, as well as vibrato and other modulation.

EDIT: used the wrong word for 'portamento'

I may be laughed at for this, but it sounds like a multi tracked fiddle. Or at least a synth for that instrument.

Lovely sounding, whatever it is.

If anyone's interested, I'll be selling my Theremin soon.
I haven't touched it in years.

The first one is an accordian with a tape delay effect.

The second is indeed a monophonic synth with portamento switched on, such as a minimoog V.
