Anung, Timeghost, DM, you've had your fun, now please stop with the demon tentacle rape anime talk.

I believe StayDead has a thread for that sort of thing.

K

Seriously, Princess Mononoke. Never been that in to Ghibli, though. I'm much more a Katsuhiro Otomo type of guy.

Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa for me. Still haven't bothered to see Spirited Away, mind.

Pom Poko is great. Certainly better than Tales from Earthsea (the studio's only genuinely bad film) and The Cat Returns.

Pom Poko is brilliant. It's genuinely unusual, and surprising in its humour, it's intelligent and tells an actual story with substance I cared about, from beginning to end. It's either that or Kiki, or maybe Totoro. I don't like the more epic ones, Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away eventually bored me to death.

Each to their own I guess. :)

My favourite is probably Kiki.

Might watch a couple of these sometime soon. Would people recommend a dubbed version, or subtitled Japanese?

Subtitled dub.

I get next to nothing out of Japanese dialog. But, since they're not always translated by the same people you occasionally wind up with two different interpretations of the same dialogue which can be enlightening.

Subtitled is the safer option. Some of the dubs for the early Ghibli films are terrible (Laputa particularly) and the translations aren't always perfect either. The newer films, Mononoke onwards, have better dubs but as long as you don't have a problem with subtitled films (I know a few people do) then it is still the preferred option. Never attempt to watch Grave of the Fireflies dubbed though, it completely kills the film's power.

From what I've seen I'd say Fireflies>Mononoke>Spirited Away for a close 123

I'd start with Legend of the Overfiend.

Best dialogue ever:

A colleague insits it's Laputa (which I've yet to see) but I'd go for Princess Mononoke myself, followed by Spirited and Totoro. *wub*

You're all going to put in ban requests for me now, I know, but I hated Porco. Dunno, maybe I should give it another go... Not really a fan of anthropomorphic animals in real-world environments, I guess. If it's a fantasy world it's fine, but something about Porco's real-world leanings just weirded me out, I think.

Read the books then go back and watch it; it makes a lot more sense.

Arrietty needs more love, especially since they made an effort to localise it with an English dub. (Purists can take a walk: The cinema didn't have the Jap dub) And what a soundtrack

And no love for The Cat Returns? A wonderful film to watch with children due to it's brisk pace. My niece adores it.

Never seen Totoro. :shifty:

So, inspired by this thread and all the people saying it's great, (which I already knew really) I'm buying it now from Amazon.

Because it's a bad argument. If you have to read a book to understand a film then the film does a poor job of telling the story.
