Books can (and should) accentuate your appreciation of a film but it is the fault of the film if it doesn't convey the relevant themes. It's not your fault because you haven't read the book.

Jurassic Park gets worse after you read the book.

It's a gooseberry fool argument because the film is good without reading the book anyway.

There were a few things that didn't tick when I first watched Earthsea. It only describes Ged as Sparrowhawk in the film, the blurb refers to him as Ged. This I found a little confusing. I was inspired to read the books after watching them film and I can appreciate it much more now. I haven't got around to reading Howl's Moving Castle yet though.

As much as I have a soft spot for Pom Poko because of how steeped it is in traditional Japanese folklore, I certainly wouldn't call it the best and most people would probably and rightly find it overlong and meandering, with little in the way of real plot and characters.

Not a big fan of Ghibli but I'll go with Princess Mononoke.

Porco Rosso is the best, Tales From Earthsea is by far the worst.

I saw Spirited Away in the cinema years ago and that's it. I really liked it and it was always on my "to do list" to check out the rest of the Ghibli movies. So I've ordered Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Howl's Moving Castle on Blu-Ray. Should be here by Wednesday. If I like them I may start a collection.

BrianBlessedsBitch wrote:Subtitled is the safer option. Some of the dubs for the early Ghibli films are terrible (Laputa particularly) and the translations aren't always perfect either. The newer films, Mononoke onwards, have better dubs but as long as you don't have a problem with subtitled films (I know a few people do) then it is still the preferred option. Never attempt to watch Grave of the Fireflies dubbed though, it completely kills the film's power.

That would probably explain why I never got all the way through it.

I remember the sub and dub for Ponyo telling almost different stories, the former being much darker.

Looks like it's going to be a bit of a Ghibli fest at the Ord house this weekend. My Nausicaä, Ponyo, Whispers of the Heart, Laputa, Arrietty and Howls Moving Castle blu-rays have arrived!

Probably because it isn't available on Blu-Ray.

i like so many but probably totoro. it's simple but it captures the essence of what it means to be a child wonderfully and the way it blends the idyllic natural beauty with the fantastical creatures is so good.
