(Old article) RIP iPod: Apple kills its oldest unchanged product

"The [iPod] Touch was supposed to be the death knell for the classic. But instead, the design showed a remarkable durability. A large part of that was down to the capacity of the device, which started at 80GB and had been bumped up to 160GB by 2009. Next to an iPod Touch which, even today, maxes out at 64GB of space, it appealed to those with enormous music collections and a desire to carry everything with them all the time."

Since my iPod Classic died a few years ago, I've used my phone as my on-the-go music player and it's, well, gooseberry fool. The storage space is woeful. I had a 32GB iPod and had to un-tick large amounts of my iTunes Library simply to get all my music on there, and now it's a few years later and I'm well over 40GB.

What I'm looking for is a replacement, basically. All of Apple's products seem to be cloud-based, or prohibitively expensive (a second-hand classic, for example :slol: ) but everything else is either small or apparently not very good. I appreciate I probably won't be able to use iTunes on any new machine but I was thinking I could continue to use iTunes on my computer and simply copy-and-paste my library onto the device any time I need to make updates.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas of how to get a large-capacity portable music player, in this, the year of our lord 2015?

And to make sure this isn't just another dead question thread; what kind of music player do you use? Do you have an iPod? iPhone? Walkman? Do you use your Samsung phone (like me :( )? Blackberry? Portable vinyl player? Minidiscs? Do you sing to yourself on the bus? Do you hate headphones and those that wear them?

I've got a 4th gen 32GB iPod Touch.

In order to keep my music library (18GB) on there I had to deselect all the podcasts I had and now I have iTunes set to load only the unlistened ones onto it.

I still stand by my thoughts that there is a gap in the market for a iPod Classic replacement device. Phone storage just doesn't cut it and streaming is hit and miss depending on coverage, especially when driving.

Luckily my iPod Classic is still going strong, however it pains me that only Apple can fill this need in my life and I'm tied to itunes. I'd kill for a simple Android based music player, with say 128GB of storage.

I use a Samsung phone (Galaxy S4) as my music player. Paid about £18 for a 64gb microSD card. Really don't see the problem here as long as you don't mind putting the music on there the old-fashioned drag-and-drop way.

I have a 6th gen iPod touch.

My phone doesn't have enough space and my data allowance and signal on the way to work wont let me stream music from my home server so the iPod is the best option really.

Your phone is almost the same as mine. I have two questions for you:

- £18?!? Where? :o
- What player do you use to actually play the files on your device? I use Google Play Music but it's very poor - very little support for album covers, songs are often scrambled or parts missed (giving a "scratched" sound), gaps between songs, etc.

The one I use can be bought currently for £17.99 on Amazon by going here.

At the moment I'm just using the default music player on the phone, with very little issue. Although that could well be because I'm quite anal about the way it's presented so I make sure that everything is tagged (and where possible has proper album art attached) properly before copying them across, although for some songs it's unavoidable but there are many highly-rated apps on the Play store for downloading album art and applying it on the phone.

With regards to the scratched sound I'd say just make sure that the music you buy or, erm, 'acquire' is in the best format and bitrate you can find. I'm not sure if the Galaxy can play .flac files by default but 320kbps mp3s should be an appropriate substitute.

Hope this helps!

I've always found the comparative lack of capacity on modern devices to be crazy. I loved my iPod Classic!

Its all down to cost, the solid state chips are pricey so to get the same amount of space the cost would be nuts, the Classic used mechanical storage i do believe so could be bigger for less.

Yeah ipod classic is a miniature hard disk.

Still a decent device but my main issue with the smaller apple devices in general is irreplaceable battery for something you may keep for years and years (should be the case for phones too but software support drops out and they're made to die).

I used to use an iriver clix which was an awesome little player, lovely ui and had the tactile feel totally missing from touch devices (ie can use in your pocket), but only 2GB :slol: and required windows media player 10.

I've thought about using it again but no point really. I use my phone, the default HTC app is actually very good including for album art (even finds stuff like audio books) and consistent with the rest of the OS. Before that I used winamp but the ui is dated and slow to use.

I got a Deezer sub free with my phone although soon to expire. It's an awesome app, better than Spotify I think, and built around syncing play lists as and when I fancy listening. The library is good and the quality is excellent (high quality streaming and download option, 320kbps I think). On 4G 2 gig allowance I can comfortably download whole albums on the train and carry on listening. When I'm bored, sync something else. Phone is only 16gb but then so we're loads of Flash based devices (I had 2 gig :p).

I don't know if iriver still make anything but I would check them out. Korean company.

Download the Google Music Manager on your PC and point it at your music collection, it'll then upload everything to your Google Play Music library (to a maximum of 50,000 tracks) which you can then stream/download when you want to, on whatever device you have connected. All for free.

You will probably find however that your any "explicit" songs you have will no longer be as they do "match" songs to save upload times / server space to clean versions of songs in their music selling service so you may find suddenly lots of radio friendly versions of everything.

Hah, thanks for clarifying that Errkal. I was beginning to feel like I'd wasted my money on the SD card but as the majority of my music collection is hip-hop perhaps not..
