I remember the reaction my parents had when I put on REmake on the GameCube, they were mighty impressed.

Going by gen, Donkey Kong Country was the first, then Mario 64, then Rogue Squadron 2 and finally PGR3. Nothing's really blown me away this gen except maybe Driveclub. Uncharted 4 will probably do it, though.

People may laugh but Crysis 2 blew me away on PS3. Looked so much better than even First Party games on the system, was crazy. And so much fun to play. I hope they bring out a trilogy. never got to play 3.

The cutscenes in FFIX, I couldn't believe it was running on my PS1. I played VII after IX so it had less impact, but I still thought they were unreal.

If we're gonna talk about Final Fantasy cutscenes, there's one in particular that absolutely blew my mind when I saw it.

Specifically it was that I'd never seen animation like that anywhere before. Toy Story had been released, and CGI animation was nothing new, but to see realistically modelled and animated people, in a video game no less, was just incredible. Not only that, but these characters were showing emotion and telling a small story of their own without a word of dialogue. It was one of those moments that cemented just how important video games were. That showed me there was nothing that other mediums could do that Video Games couldn't do just as well.

It's probably my favourite cutscene of all time, simply for that reason..

Thinking back upon all of the games that I've had to pleasure of playing, it's quite hard for me to isolate any list I compose to just a few stand-out titles - mainly because a good few I just can't recall right now, even though they bowled me over back then. Here's a couple:

Big Red Racing (PC)
My first proper PC game. Completely blew me away after only having played the likes of Virtua Racing (which was admittedly impressive in its own right) and various other, mostly 2D MegaDrive titles. I still recall marveling at the "really good 3D graphics" to my siblings as we played it. Better looking games would soon come my way - Quake II and such - but this one stands out more to me for some reason.

Sonic Adventure (DC)
That opening video sequence, the Orca chase scene, the smoothness and the speed and the at-the-time beautiful, beautiful graphics. And all of that as part of what I'd been dreaming of for years at that point - a true 3D Sonic game in my hands. It didn't get any better than that.

Rogue Leader (GCN)
I was a Star Wars nut as a child, so getting to feel as if I was actually playing in one of my very favorite films (helped no end by the gorgeous visuals) was a stand-out event in my early gaming years. I think my jaw dropped to the floor when I first got stuck in.

More to come later, probably.

I was so excited by a demo version of Lylat Wars in Toys R Us that I literally fainted in the line to play it and had to be carted off by parents. I did a little dance in the living room when I opened it (the console) on Christmas Day.

It was just a massive step up from what I had been playing (the Mega Drive). It was my first generational leap too, so I only ever know MD graphics. I was also 10 so I was also old enough to appreciate the difference. Pretty much a man by then.

Both of these titles were on the same demo disc that came with an issue of Offical Playstation 2 Magazine (I think), Medal of Honor Frontline and Ratchet & Clank.

The impact of the former properly came from playing it over my cousin's. That D-Day opening was something else, the sense of immersion and chaos all around was breathtaking and I dare not replay it for fear of tarnishing those memories.

I loved the Spyro games and got a tonne of playtime out of Year of the Dragon. But then seeing what Insomniac were doing on the PS2 made the games look like crap. I mean you went from this:

To this:

Metropolis from the first Ratchet & Clank is one of my favourite levels in gaming. The scale of the city, the hover cars floating about, the giant blimp in the sky, on a visual level it was miles ahead of Insomniac's prior games. Then it had this fantastic music and the tone of it all made it something special for me. I like that Ratchet & Clank is still near the forefront of graphical prowess with each generationl leap, Tools of Destruction's Metropolis embarassed the PS2 incarnation and now the reboot seems set to do it again.

I remember being blown away by GTA 3 when I first played it, it was just perfect at the time, now it plays like garbage.

Following on from its top-down 2D predecessors, it was quite something, wasn't it?

For me Freelancer was amazing, up until then I had only ever really played strategy games, or Tomb Raider, so I was just used to people bobbing their heads to the dialogue or square lips moving up and down, when I first saw the animations in the in game cinematics it was amazing. After that I remember X3: The reunion blowing me away with the scale of the space ships and the planets, too bad the gameplay was so lack luster. :(

It's ridiculous now -and to be fair, it was probably ridiculous even back then- but I remember that when I first saw Smurf on the Colecovision, I thought, "Wow, that's as good as graphics will ever really need to be".
