The Splinter Cell one that came free with one issue of NGC Magazine.
Absolutely no reference of it in the magazine - I think it was a last minute thing. But to actually get a demo disc for the Gamecube was a massive moment.

Another classic "whoa" moment for me was seeing Ridge Racer running on the PlayStation. 3D arcade-style polygons were in my room... that felt amazing :datass: .

Most recently, I remember Bioshock 1 wowing me when you emerge from the water at the start. I stayed there wondering why the cutscene stopped until the prompt to move appeared.

MGS2 was and probably always will be the most impressive leap to me though.

Mario 64 for me. That truly 3d jump with the new controller was out of this world for me.

Yeah that was pretty incredible. Still remember it blowing my 10 year old mind when I tried it on a demo pod in Toys 'R Us.

An obvious choice but the original Crysis was easily the best looking game for a few years. Helped justify the decision to build a gaming PC.

I remember playing Ocarina of Time on a demo pod in Argos and thinking it was withcraft. More recently I'd say Driveclub and perhaps The Order.

I'm going to sound like a twat saying this but it was when I switched to 4k. Yeah it's stupidly expensive and not worth the money at the minute but at the time I had the money to burn. Hard to describe without actually showing it but it is always apparent when a new game defaults to 1080 and I have to dial it up. I would sit someone in front of Rise of the Tomb Raider and just switch from 900p > 1080p > 2k > 4k. If anyone can say that resolution doesn't matter after that then they are a true mentalist.

For consoles I'd say Driveclub without a doubt. That is an incredible achievement on dated hardware. If it was 60fps then it would be an actual miracle.

I had a similar experience making the jump from a 19 inch portable CRT TV to a 42 inch flat screen LCD HD TV. I had an argument with a colleague at the time who reckoned they couldn't tell the difference between standard and high def and frankly they needed their eyes testing.

Link to the Past. I remember being in a shop and saw those graphics for the first time!

Super Mario 64 is the best example of this. The jump from SNES/Megadrive to the N64 was insane.

Recently, Xenoblade Chronicles X, for the scale of it and the beautiful landscapes. Some of the characters look a bit crap, but Monolithsoft have some of the best environment artists in the industry. Arriving in Sylvavum at night, after walking and swimming the whole way across the islands and ocean north of Primordia, that has to be one of my favourite things I've recently experienced in a game.

I can't think of anything else apart from that. I mean, there are some beautiful looking games on the current gen consoles, but I have trouble picking one out.

Actually, it may have been Atic Atac, but they have a very similar visual style.

I remember being quite impressed with the PS1 Tyranosaur demo, too.

Some really impressive stuff on the ST, given I had a Spectrum at the time.

Oh, and Defender of the Crown on the Amiga

That certainly was awesome, Turnip. The original "Demo 1" PlayStation disc  .

Another shout for Rogue Leader, seeing screen shots of it absolutely blew me away and then playing it for the first time...even now I think it holds up pretty well.

Another one that stands out is when I first saw screenshots of Max Payne, specifically one like this-

Image

the fact that it looked like an actual person (albeit one who'd just eaten an entire lemon) absolutely amazed me.

The Uncharted series has been full of moments which have blown me away too, particularly some areas in 3 as well had moments which particularly wowed me, really beautiful looking games.

I like how Sam Lake still makes that face to this day:

Looks a bit blurry these days but Burnout 3 on a CRT televison at 60FPS looked so good back in the day it was unreal:

And more Recently Driveclub:

Hot damn, what a difference a decade makes.

In 1992, this was pretty much mind blowing...

But I have to agree getting a Gamecube home and being able to play Rogue Leader was pretty damn impressive (and to be honest it still is)...
