I remember my PE lessons back at my secondary school with a shudder. This was the mid-70's. Everything was grey and rainy, all the time (except for the wonderful 'drought' of '76). Do they still do cross-country running in secondary schools these days? Christ, that was murder. And rugby: nothing less than a free pass for every psychotic school bully to beat the living daylights out of all the weedy boys. In all honesty, I hated PE at school. I sagged-off and I mostly got away with it. Just used to stay in the classroom and read my science fiction books. Didn't worry me: I was always a very skinny kid, with no effort on my part. Funny thing is, when I left school I actually got into exercise in a big way - jogging every day, swimming (40 lengths of an Olympic-sized pool three times a week), cycling, canoing, climbing, potholing, hiking and all the rest of it. At school I couldn't have been more uninterested in physical fitness - away from school, free to exercise in my own way at my own pace, I absolutely loved it. Got my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award hiking about on Dartmoor for one entire summer...

Yeah we had to do Cross Country as well. The teachers drove back and forth along the route to have a go at anyone who was walking rather than running/jogging.

We did load of cross country, we all stayed in the school grounds as it was big enough and had its own woods.

30 or so lads, counted off 1,2,1,2 to split teams, teacher punts the football onto the pitch and that was it, game on. We used to get triple games so it was a full hour and a half of football.

Also we were told forget your kit once, that's a mistake, 2nd time you do it in your underwear. We never thought it would happen, then from a classroom window, we saw a column of lads off on their cross country run, at the back a straggler in just his Y fronts.....in late November. Not many PE kits forgotten after that!

Endless football because it was the only thing that would get the mongs who inhabited the lower PE set to behave.

2 years after leaving school I was playing rugby semi professionally.

Oh what could have been. :(

Went to an all girls' school so no issues with any gender divide. We did everything from volleyball to football to swimming, depending on the time of year and mood of the teacher. I found PE was kind of a waste of time because whatever we did we had to keep it mild enough for everyone to keep up.

Most of the enjoyment I got out of sport as a kid/teenager was through stuff I did in my own time. I found early on that my stubbornness lent itself to endurance sports so I took up cross-country running from age 8 and cross-country skiing from age 10. Competed in the state finals of both. Stopped doing both when I discovered rowing at age 13, and a few years later I was rowing in the school's first VIII in the national finals. I also competed in interschool badminton, baseball, gymnastics, athletics etc, but usually in one of the lower teams and just for fun.

Funnily enough despite all that I never, ever got higher than a B for school PE classes.

PE and Games were alright.

Got to play rugby and Cricket, can't go wrong with it.

3 stand out times.

the girls first hockey team v the boys first rugby team. We strawberry floating hammered them, I mean like 30 - 0. I remember it was lashing down, and I remember there was alot of shouting from the teachers because we were just belting the wee ball as hard as we could in the general direction of the goal. Turned out to be a great tactic. They never played us at rugby. Sexist.

Another time, again involving rain, but in the summer time, so no cricket. so they had to do something with us, so they put us in the indoor gym, where again, the girls were playing rounders with a tennis ball. Teachers thought it was a good idea to have girls v boys. Turned into a game of ricochet with people running and ducking for cover as a tennis ball violently bounced around the place. Dead easy to hit 6's with a tennis ball, under arm throwers, four walls and a roof.

And the last, was the school Gym. up until I was 18 I never had to pay to use a Gym, and got to use it when ever the strawberry float I wanted. Fully kitted out. Good times, wish I had of kept that type of training up after school. Wouldn't be the mess I am today.

Rugby and Cricket, enjoyed both. Didn't do much else in PE or Games, I never liked Swimming, because I don't trust water so I always said I was ill or forgot my trunks and just sat at the side and perved the wee dolls :datass: :datass: :datass:

I could never be arsed for it, I was the kid who got out of as many lessons as he could. I actually enjoyed athletics and tennis, but our PE teachers always pandered to the rugby boys and we rarely did them.
