I'm not sure you understand. Why not make the lesson actually fun, rather than make it something like cross country every week where nobody enjoyed it and put little to no effort in?

PE in schools should be enjoyable, if people want to enjoy sports/do them they will. Generally the people in the bottom sets in PE in school are unfit because they're always forced to do sports they don't enjoy, so they just don't bother at all.

Doesn't matter how cold and wet it is, once you've been running for 10 minutes you'll be warm.

I went to a specialist sports college, but there was never much sport. We had tennis courts, huge gyms, 3 or 4 football and rugby pitches and a full sized running track. Oh, and a leisure centre next door with astroturf and a swimming pool. But we never seemed to dedicate much time to sports given the potential.

I think we should reform and do what universities do, which is to have Wednesday afternoon given over for do sport.

I had a pretty good teacher for 3 years, he was really enthusiastic and was able to get a room of grumbling kids to actually do the sports. One thing that did annoy me though was the fact at my school girls didn't have to do cross country running. If I have to run for 3 or 5 miles then so should every other strawberry floater.

The problem is lardos don't like anything remotely physical. Because it's hard. If you had your way those kids would do even less and probably end up playing StarCraft 2.

Indeed, because there are only two options: grueling cross country in the pouring rain, or 'fun' sports that involve standing around for 80% of the time. You can see that unfit kids aren't going to get fit playing baseball and that basically your 'great' teacher was just keeping the fat kids occupied for a while, right? Because that's the point, surely? To turn unfit kids into fit kids?

In my experience, the actual unfit kids in school were unfit because they just didn't want to do what was necessary to be fit. Sure, gooseberry fool teachers, gooseberry fool facilities and gooseberry fool curriculums don't help, but then neither does no enthusiasm.

Lardos? Out of the 30 kids in the lower set for our half of the year, I'd say two were overweight, maybe 3. It wasn't people who were fat, it was people who didn't enjoy doing PE so didn't bother. I know I personally didn't bother, not because it was hard, but because I found it dull as hell and I could actually be doing something useful were I inside studying.

Being good at sports doesn't make you a better person. I value intelligence a hell of a lot higher than being good at sports.

I don't even know why you're even bringing overweight people into this, overweight people shouldn't be the problem of the school, it's gooseberry fool parenting or medical conditions that cause children to be overweight.

You can not "like" sports, but still not be fat.

I was a skinny little runt at school so I was one of the ones to be picked last for most things.

I had the last laugh in one basketball game though as I was suddenly one fire NBA jam style and was just sinking swish shots from everywhere 8-) I scored something daft like 10 3 pointers and the teacher stopped the game to tell us to stop going for daft shots...but I was getting them!

I was gooseberry fool in every other game though.

Oh and we had a supply teacher for a few months as our main teacher hurt his leg, so we quickly found his weakness and wound him up to the point that he called us all "PEASANTS!" and then kicked a bench with his bare feet :slol:

That's Danish longball. Great game.

Those two aren't mutually exclusive ;) Have you seen kids nowadays? Bunch of fat strawberry floats. In my day there was 1, maybe 2 fat kids. Now the fatties seem to be taking over.

The first two years of high school was a mixture of sports: rugby, football, badminton, possibly some others that I've forgotten. Then in third year we got to pick a sport to play for the next two years so I went for basketball. I liked it but I wasn't very good at it.

We also sometimes played a version of dodgeball but I don't really remember what the differences were. It was about as fun as the regular kind, though:

PE was awesome. I was a bit of a pipsqueak back when I was in school, so Rugby and stuff wasn't exactly my forte, but I've always been fit and decent at sports. Basketball has always been my favourite, damn not being over 6'. :x

I couldn't stand all the whining little babies who never took part in PE, because it was 'fascism' to make kids run about. Read: You're a fat banana split, you're a lazy banana split, you think you're too 'cool' to wear a PE kit, you're too scared to take part in team sports or you just like trying to be different. Piss off.

I loved PE at school. The teachers were generally pretty decent and knew the deal. In our core PE lessons we'd do a 2 minute warm up and then play football or tennis or something for the rest of the lesson. I was quite sporty at school so enjoyed going out and doing physical activities and so chose it at GCSE. Even enjoyed the theory as well as the practical.

The highlight of our core PE lessons was Mr Brown. Mr Brown was in his 50s, with a superb bristly mustache and an even better Bristol accent that made him sound like a farmer. Whenever he took our lessons he'd leave us in suspense as to what we would be doing, before announcing, in the most farmer accent you could imagine: "Today we're playing... soccerrrrrrrrrrrr." At which point most of the boys would cheer and start shouting in victory "soccerrrrrr!!!"

I also once kicked a volleyball at a supply teacher's head by accident. :slol:

PE in our school was usually an extra training session for the school sports teams, so it was pretty much the same thing every week. Never really liked it that much because basketball was, for some reason, regarded as a sport only girls should play. The lads were turfed outside to play soccer or GAA, neither of which I could play because I am gooseberry fool at kicking things. But then the boys were allowed play basketball if they wanted so I did that for a bit and for the final 2 years rugby was given an equal standing so I got to smash into people at school. That was fun.

I was lucky, I did canoeing, PE was pretty sweet at times then the strawberry floats in the LEA changed everything and made us do dance. banana split's.

Edit: Hockey was a personal fave, so many people seemed to end up with marks on their shins, I have no idea why.
