And how do I know if I have one?

About 5-6 days ago, I noticed a cut/ulcer at the bottom of my gum, and it was agony. Instead of getting smaller, Its gotten bigger and more painful. I looked in the mirror, and its a white spot about 5mm across that looks like an ulcer.

However, My mum just looked at me and reckons my face is swolen up right where this thing is. She thinks its an absess.

So, How do I know if its an absess? inb4 dentist, Cant afford it, yo.

What did you cut it with? It could now be infected,

Get youself some Corsadyl and use it as often as it says (twice a day I'd guess). Book yourself an apointment at the Dentist ASAP too.

A picture would be helpful. Basically, if it's at the part of your gum right below a tooth, it could be an abscess. I doubt we have any dentists on here though, so I'd say call NHS Direct or visit a walk in centre. If it's an abscess you'll have to bite the bullet (no pun intended!) and visit a dentist, as Wikipedia says they don't go away on their own.

Sounds like an abscess to me based on my Google and Wikipedia degrees in dentistry and having not seen the actual lesion (HI EVERYBODY! HI DR NICK!). Maybe visit your GP first and see what they think, to save you getting financially raped by your dentist? Or perhaps you could go to A&E, I've never strawberry floated my teeth up or anything, so I don't know if they'll see you.

I'd suggest taking a metric fuckton of painkillers instead of just a fuckload myself.

I've had two abscesses. Both formed under the tooth.

The first resulted in my whole face swelling up, making it impossible for me to open my mouth. It got so bad over two days that I couldn't even open it wide enough to pop a painkiller.

Visit to the doctors was useless. A&E could do nothing as they didn't have an ENT unit at the hospital. Dentist could do nothing as I couldn't open my mouth. In fact when he saw me he said "Sheesh." and shook his head. He referred me to the dental hospital. They looked at me and went "Jesus" and swallowed back a bit of vomit. They referred me to the local Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery unit.

Within an hour I was under general anaesthetic and they were cutting a hole in my neck to drain it. I woke up with a 2 inch diameter hole in my neck and 6 straw type drains inserted into my face, which were filling up a colostomy type bag with blood and pus.

I was in hospital for a week.

Took me three months to fully open my mouth again.

Second time wasn't so bad, they just had to slit open my gum with a scalpel in the day surgery unit. Without any anaesthetic.

Get it checked ASAP.

I researched dentist costs for anyone who's interested.

About £16.50 for a check up and basic treatment, £45.60 for bigger treatment, £198 if you got big issues.

Basically, this thing in my mouth is pretty big now, my face is swelling and the pain is spreading on the right of my jaw. I have no idea how Im gonna pay for it though.

I don't suppose you live anywhere near a dental hospital do you? Most dentist's will be sympathetic and treat you then let you pay up in installments. If it is really bad they will refer you onto a oral surgery unit in a hospital, so all you will have to worry about is the check up fee.

Got this sorted today. Only £16.50 too.

Thankfully its not an abcess. The dentist said it was the biggest ulcer shes seen, Looks like it might of gotten infected. But, It should go away on its own.

Still hurts like a mummy strawberry floater though, and it is odd my face swelled up.
