It's got one of those 6 pin power cables.

I want to be able to play rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa and the Arma series at respectable framerates with decent visuals, the system has a Intel Core2Duo 2.13ghz and 8GB PC6400 800mhz.

This - you're going to have to start again pretty much. Getting a good gpu will mean nothing if it has a bottleneck of a CPU behind it.

Sadly the platform you're running on is just too old.

?

There's a video on youtube with the 2.13ghz Core 2 cpu and HD 6800 running Assetto Corsa at 40FPS, this old pc with a 256MB ati x1550 can run Arma 2 at 15-20fps with medium settings @
480p :dread:

Surely a newer gfx card will allow me to play these games in 720p at 30fps or better? What if I add a Core 2 Extreme 2.93 Ghz cpu?

I can get that and a HD 7770 (used) for £65, will this combo work with that PSU?

I wish rFactor 2 and Arma would come to the PS4 then I wouldn't have to bother with gaming on PC :(

Buying a new system for these games just isn't worth it. Will this ghetto combo do the job?

You are going to be pushing the psu to the max and regardless of how powerful the gpu is, and youtube videos might not reveal this, there are going to be certain more cpu intensive scenarios where the framerate is so inconsistent that it makes the experience less enjoyable. Especially on simulation heavy, physics driven games like racers.

In my experience, when this is the case, reducing the resolution makes little difference.

Assetto Corsa is coming to ps4, but it is not a good game. This is one of the rare situations where i would say stick to the ps4. Don't waste money trying to add stuff to a fundamentally underpowered pc to get intensive sims running at sub hd at 30fps at best.

You will need at least an i5 cpu (and new motherboard), 600w psu, 8gb ram and a gtx 750ti at the very least to make a modern gamimg pc. There will be nothing you can salvage for this. Check out sites like logical increments, eurogamer/pcgamer have part guides for respective budgets.

600W is a massive overestimation for that.

Arma is very CPU heavy. Its also very graphically taxing if you are wanting to run it with good settings at a decent framerate.

I think another issue here is you say respectable framerates and decent visuals, but then say you've seen a video of someone running it at 480p and 20fps. These are entirely seperate targets. Respectable framerate and decent visuals says to me 60fps and settings on High or better.

I have an i5, 16GB RAM and SLI 970's and even that can chug on Arma when it gets really heavy with everything maxed.

Also regarding Assetto Corsa, unless you just want to hotlap on your own, it can also gooseberry fool itself when there's more than a handful of AI present. I'm sticking to my recommendation of either starting from scratch which will be more expensive, or stick to the ps4 - you could indeed spend money adding a better card to that machine, but the results - sub-HD at 30fps or less - are not worth the financial cost.

There's always the option of keeping some stuff and rebuilding on a newer cheap CPU and motherboard.

The Pentium Anniversary G3258 can be had for around £50, he could probably put together that CPU with a motherboard, new memory, a better PSU and a new graphics card for around £250. Add in a cheap CPU cooler and you can overclock that CPU to around 4Ghz apparently.

Also doesnt really help unless your focus is unthreaded applications or desktop use;

Certain games get a boost with the Pentium-AE overclocked, such as F1 2013 and Company of Heroes 2, but the overclocking is more important when it comes to multiple GPU scenarios. The downside of that conclusion is that an i3 is better at multiple GPU scenarios right off the bat, and for single GPU gaming the trend is towards games that can use the threads. This is a big discrepancy between when we used to overclock older CPU and today – the games today can use multiple cores. Having a lack of cores can really damage frame rates in some titles, especially when the amount of GPUs starts to rise. Unfortunately the only way to get more cores is to buy a better processor, or buy one that unlocks cores.

The older games he's talking about almost certainly will benefit from it, obviously an i3 would be better but it'd probably be almost twice as much to buy too. If your focus is keeping costs down and playing reasonably old games I think an overclocked G3258 is not a bad bet.

The Digital Foundary 2015 budget gaming PC guide is worth a look...

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... g-pc-guide

...like you say it pretty much concludes that for modern games the step up to a cheap i3 is probably worth the extra money, but it depends what games you want to play.

Neither Assetto Corsa nor Arma 3 are old games.

Assetto Corsa is over a year old, Arma 3 is over 2 years old. The games that they are talking about needing an i3 for are much newer and/or have much high system requirements.

Ok, I have AC and Arma 3 and you have according to your profile, played neither. I know what my specs are and know how the games perform. I can tell you that if you want good visuals and a good framerate you are spending more than £250.

Respectfully, I think your definition of good framerate and decent visuals and SugarCubes currently with a Core2Duo...might differ somewhat.
