As such I'm looking for a new job, no idea what - I just want something else asap! I did consider joining the local police force, I know there are some policemen around here so can anyone tell me about more about what it's like to be a Mr. Plod? wages/ what qualifications are needed, what I might expect to have to do - the position I was looking at was 'support officer', is that just like a training job?

Depends where u live, london pays better to compensate living costs. On the whole it pays alright without needing loads of qualifications. I think to be a copper u need C's in English and Maths then pass an assesment centre (basically to establish you arent rascist, a thug or thick as pig ****) easy enough. The assesment is based on quick interview, written and maths test, and role play acting scenarios (see how you deal with pressure and aggresive people). Fitness requirement is laughable really too.

The job is great, varied exciting rewarding. It can be tough as you deal with difficult situations, you need self confidence and not be afraid of confrontation. Starting wages are about 22k up to 24k after training then each year it increases up to 31k for a basic constable. Promotion earns big money and better pension. Pension itself is great if u stick the full career. Shift patterns can be tough, working nights but its varied i work 6 on 4 off so i get long rest days! Overtime is plentiful if u want it! No 2 days are ever the same and i love it, but paperwork can be a pain sometimes as can general negative attitude to police.

I cant say much about Community support officers they get paid less, have less responsibility and dont get to drive cars fast :D Return of the Star can probably tell u more.

Is there any way I can be a detective relatively easily? I have all the relevant qualifications, including a good degree from a top uni and I've watched every Murder She Wrote off the tele.

EDIT: I'm actually serious about how someone can become a detective.

everyone has to do 2 years on response then you can apply to CID, its a competency based interview, you basically use examples from the 2 yrs to show why u would be a good detective.

Hey, FatDaz, what's your opinion on weed? For instance, if a friend offered you some on a night out, or if you were having dinner at his, or something, what would you do, being off duty? Would you arrest him? Would you say no thanks? And yeah, let's say someone would actually offer you some even knowing about your job? Would you report him?

That's cool. Notice that I'd never actually ask a question like that to a police man in real life and how I am exploiting internet anonymity to increase my twisted knowledge of the world.

its fine, you'd be suprised how many people do ask me that though! There is this perception that once you become a police officer, you instantly become a tw@t. Its not true im a normal person too, albeit i dont do drugs or smoke or commit crime but thats just me!

Another one working for the man here, specifically a big Civil engineering firm as a junior draughtsman.

It's mostly dull and there are absolutely no girls my age around. :(

To be fair, I do more than that but then again I get quite a few days off.

Join the club fella.
It makes me laugh when people complain about 8-9 hour shifts.

Can I complain about 12 1/2 hour shifts?

No not Complain.

It is? I don't mean to be presumptuous but I thought women liked having other women around to talk to.
I get about an hour or two of decent games/technology/cars chatter everyday before the whole strawberry floating office simultaneously switches over to sport and I sit in the corner waiting for home time.

No. no other girls means a) no stress, b) more work that gets done (with the males as my minions, apart from my boss of course) and c) .... more guys to myself. :)
at least to flirt with, I like my currently untouched state at the moment.

Ah, I see. I just find it boring working in an entirely male populated office and thought women would see it the same way, aside from the scenery aspect of course.
