PostWhere should I live?
by Lex-Man » Wed Jan 27, 2016 9:27 am

I'm probably moving back to England in August but I'm thinking of applying for a places on teacher training. I kind of want to live on the coast by the coast, but somewhere near London. At the moment I'm looking at Southampton, Portsmouth, Exeter and Bath.

IExter is not on the coast nor really that near London, I just kind of think it might be nice also Bath is not on the coast.

Does anyone live has lived in any of these places? What are they like. I'm interested in running, indie music so want to go to gigs and probably learning a bit more Japanese. I use to live in Wimbledon and kind of think I should just move back there because I still have a bunch of people there who pretend to like me. Also it's easy to get into London, I can get to see gigs and the common/ richmond deer park is cool for running.

So where do you think I should live?

I've never been but isn't Bath often voted one of the best places to live in the UK?

Bath is a nice place but if you want to be on the coast and close to London then it probably isn't your best option.

Drummy is probably right, if you want the coast and to be close to London then Brighton is a decent bet.

I've never lived in any of those places, but my friend is totally enchanted by Bath. She moved there from Bristol and lives there already few years. If you think about running, I guess you would have the chance to jog in a really charming place. And it's not so far from the coast: about 33 miles.

I went to Uni in Bath for 4 years. It's a beautiful place to live with some really nice restaurants. There's not too much happening in terms of nightlife but Bristol is not far.

Weston-Super-Mare doesn't count as coast. ;)

I've always loved Bath and failed to get a journo job at Future Publishing in 2000, mainly because I wanted to live there. Cocked up the interview a bit.

I always hear great things about Brighton, I have several friends there. Has to be the best shout if you wanna be near London, and seems like a really cool place to be.

This is all true, and it's only around 10 minutes away from Bristol on the train.

Bristol is also ace. Very impressed with it when I was there for a wedding in the summer.

I enjoyed my one night out in Bristol with the GR gang. Seemed like a good craic.

Come and live in beautiful Crawley in leafy West Sussex. Ideally placed for trips to the sea or the city, just 20 mins from Brighton by train, 35 mins from London by train and 5 mins from Gatwick airport by train.

AND IT'S CRAWLEY MATE, CROWLAY

I'm kind of put off by Brighton due to the lack of sandy beaches. Also it's got a bit of a real run down sea side vibe and fills up with tourists whenever there is any sign of warm weather. That said there are a load of cool indie cafes and shops there. Also Battle is an epic gooseberry fool hole. Moving towards the south west coast gives much better scenery and beaches.

How about Sarfend-on-Sea? Close to London, it's an hour on the train. Bits of it go into the sea. It has a great music pub (the railway hotel).

I'm kind of now thinking maybe I should go for Bournemouth although it's a bit far from London about 2.5 hours by coach. One reason that I'm thinking about not moving back to London is because of the price and I kind of think that Brighton would still be pretty expensive.

If I'm honest, whenever I go to Brighton for the day I'm always amazed by what a gooseberry fool hole it is. There's something deeply depressing about seaside towns, they seem to be full of people that struggle to find work due to the seasonality of trade and the amount of homeless people and generally vagrant-looking people just all add up to a vibe of "blurgh what a dump". Plus the students, my god the amount of quirky (twatish) uni students clogging up all the streets and cafes do my nut in.

Good for fish 'n chips though, so it balances out.

I think I've decided that I'm going to try and apply for a place in Brighton, London but then I going to hit somewhere like Bath, Bournemouth or somewhere in Cornwall. Bournemouth has super nice beaches but is full of old people, one of which is my father which is a downer.

Edit:
You know what I'm going to do Plymouth because it'll give me a good range of options.

Edit 2:
I kind of agree with Preezy about beach towns. I have been to a load of nice places around Cornwall and Dorset but they are basically full of old people and people who take care of them.
