PostWhich franchise should Nintendo reimagine next?
by Jamo3103 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 3:30 pm

I think those of us that have played it are all in agreement that Breath of the Wild is a fantastic reimagining of the Zelda franchise and has led to what could well be the best game Nintendo have made since the early N64 era.

Nintendo have some much loved franchises but some of them are feeling a little tired whilst others have been dormant for a long time and are seemingly dead. I can't help but think how much some of them would benefit from a well thought out reimagining, much like Breath of the Wild.

To get the ball rolling, I would like to see a total reinvention of the Starfox Franchise. Starwing and Lylat Wars were two of my favourite games on their respective systems but since then the series has gone backwards. I admittedly had a lot of fun with Adventures on the Gamecube but the core gameplay was very Zelda-lite (Although I quite liked the mechanic of flying down and playing traditional Arwing levels before engaging in exploration). The other games since (Assault, Command and Zero) all tried to play it closer to the roots of the Starfox games but none of them did the Arwing battles anywhere near as well as Lylat Wars or Starwing and new mechanics/controls only detracted from the games rather than adding to them.

Much like Breath of the Wild returned to the roots of Zelda and the open world exploration game play from the NES game. Much in the same way I'd like to see Star Fox start by returning to its roots, making a damn good Arwing based space shooter at the core. One of the things I really enjoyed about Lylat Wars was the ability to take alternate routes to the end, even if it was fairly limited in scope and I'd like the next focus of a reimagining to be all about expanding on this.

Instead of selecting planets and routes via a map I'd love you to actually be able fly from planet to planet, engaging in space battles and surface battles (still in Arwing or Landmaster, rather than on foot) along the way. Combat should be at the core of it and the game could use set pieces for key events on the planets. There could also be random encounters in space with the likes of Star Wolfs gang and other groups of space pirates, whilst there could also be peaceful ships you could engage with (perhaps to trade with or buy upgrades from). I'm not suggesting Starfox becomes Elite: Dangerous because at the core of it I think the Arcadey space battles are the best thing about the franchise but I think it could definitely take cues from some of the more open universe style Space games.

The other element which I'd like to see expanded on is the relationship between the members of the Starfox crew, I think the intercom chatter and elements of both rivalry and camaraderie between the crew have always been a lot of fun. It would be great if they could build on that aspect with a really well written script (no cut scenes please, keep it to intercom conversations!) but also let relationships between crew members have an impact on battle. For example, don't help Falco out of a tight spot in a battle and his relationship with you may deteriorate, making him less likely to go out of his way to help you in future.

How about everyone else? This is the opportunity to tell us all about your idea for a reimagining of Balloon Fight in the style of Dark Souls!

Pokémon. Stick it in a world as big and detailed as BOTW and it'd be glorious and probably the best game of all time.

Pokémon with graphics that come close to the anime series.

Pokemon meets Fire Emblem. So if a Pokemon "faints" it's gone permanently.

Mario Kart feels like it's essentially been the same game with extra gimmicks since it started. I have no idea what they could possibly do to shake it up, but I'd like them to take a totally fresh approach to it with the next iteration.

I always wondered why the never went the Diddy Kong Racing route. Add a story mode, perhaps even make it like an open world racing game set in areas of the Mushroom Kingdom (think Test Drive/Forza Horizon).

Open world mario kart x mario sports x mario platforming. Just a reasonably sized sports resort that you can drive/race around a la Diddy Kong Racing but you can jump out to 3D platform around for hidden stars or to wander into a sporting area (like a tennis court) and suddenly, Mario Sports game.

Good god no. Open World racing is not the direction I want for Mario Kart.

It ruined Burnout Paradise for me unless we're thinking of different things here.

Nintendoland, actually make it a land with Nintendo characters in it not a mini game collection. Amiibo makes characters appear in the world so you can play as them, as every other toys to life thing does. Have sections for big franchises so Mario can go scale Hyrule castle, Link can go herd Pikmin and Samus can strawberry float gooseberry fool up in Animal Crossing. Keep it constantly updated with new Amiibos and drop in stuff from upcoming games as a kind of preview or something. If for some reason Nintendo cant or dont want to allow an Amiibo to appear in game (Ken, Shovel Knight or things like that) then have them do something else meaningful like give your current character a power or make something appear in the world so you still feel like the Amiibo is of use.

I love the cross game functionality of Amiibo but the fact they havent done a toys to life game is a bit bonkers.

I'm just thinking of the opening of the first super smash bros now (but yes I know what you mean)

C'mon man, use your imagination and this is Nintendo we're talking about here so you know they can add that special touch. You could still have areas that have the 'proper' tracks but the whole world could be opened, custom tracks could be made, collectibles that add new costumes, colors etc. I was never a fan of Burnout Paradise but Diddy Kong was something special. As long as the don't add in boats and planes again, I don't want that in my Mario Kart ever again.

Oh damn, that'd be brilliant. Kind of an expansion on what they're trying with Mario Sports Stars on 3DS with an open world hub. They'd obviously have to significantly cut back the platforming/karting elements so they aren't stepping on the Mario Kart and Mario platform franchises but even just as a way of getting around it would be great.

I've always wanted a Starfox that is a cross between SF64 with Ratchet and Clank esq platforming/shooting

A proper massive MMO type Pokemon title as well

I could see Metroid benefiting enormously from a Nintendian reimagining.

Pokemon would be OK too, but that's the most obvious choice in the world, and the series is basically heading in that direction anyway.

Wouldn't mind seeing Nintendo's sports games reimagined - put them all in one big game, like that open world Burnout, or Criterions in-development unnamed racer. Race however you want. I wanna jet ski down a snowy mountain somehow.

A Pokemon MMORPG would, if done right, easily be the best massively multiplayer experience ever.

I would love to see Metroid taken back to its Super Metroid aesthetic and feel, but with a bigger and more open world and in 3D. Prime did this to an extent, but it didn't get the full BOTW treatment, and the possibilities are endless really.

Absolutely. I'd like to see less of a reimagining but a total refinement of the formula and some Nintendo ideas that I'm too stupid to even imagine.
