I don't think they look dumb, they're classics and fitted in well with the rest of the range.

The 90s models were also much easier to paint as a one piece, especially the blisters. There seems to be too much focus on details now and kind of lack character at times with less opportunity to add your own effects like relief.

The new kits are so awesome to paint though, I find. Just a joy. And they fit together beautifully. Making these warhawks, which are old and metal, has been a right pain. I've had to pin the wings, and they don't fit together well at all, liquid green stuff has had to go all over the place. Big contrast to building something like the phoenix or the treeman, which fit perfectly and are so smooth and detailed for painting.

Hello....I've begun to have an interest in Warhammer 40K since Falsey posted some stuff in the AYAI thread, been reading all about the Imperium on Wikipedia when I should have been working. Not particularly fussed about the phyiscal game playing of this, (too fiddly and expensive for me for starters!) but the lore and universe of 40K has really piqued my interest. There's something about brutal totalitarian regimes that really appeal to me (see also: Judge Dredd), maybe I secretly want to be oppressed :slol:

So anyway, can anyone recommend anything I could read (books, comics, graphic novels etc) or watch on the subject? I know there are some video games out there but nothing recent that I can see, again can anyone recommend?

If you get anything by Dan Abnett you can't really go wrong. For 40K I love his Gaunt's Ghosts, Eisenhorn, and Ravenor series. He also has some good Warhammer ones - Malus Darkblade is really really good.

There's also the Horus Heresy sequence of books which gives you a bit more background to the empire and the different Primarchs etc, but they're all written by different authors and I find the quality varies quite a bit.

Yeah, I have some tyranid metal blisters that have gaping seams and don't fit together well at all. It was also just hard to see the details when they were lead during undercoating, because they'd go dirty, and they were very easy to mark when shaving nubs or mould lines. Paint did not flow and bond as well, because naturally the paint is plastic based. They are all now pretty much plastic or resin (the resin is excellent though). The material doesn't bother me too much (although it's alway snice to have a weight to something, I keep knocking my plastic ones flying by accident) but I somehow miss the the single part metals that gave you a lot of room to paint in your own details, back when the 'eavy metal house style was more comic book like. And some of the larger models such as carnifexes had a really satisfying weight to them. I can understand that really it never made that much sense to make them out of metal, vs the detail and consistency of plastic, yet you have to wonder where the money is going now. It's all licensing and margin. There's a quality to metal kits that I can't quite put my finger on. Plus the hours and hours of work gone into a paintjob, they just have a great sense of value, like treasures or jewellery. Plastic models... not so much. They also tend to be troops, with low unit value anyway.

On the other hand, my 2001 'nid hive tyrant was so heavy it gotted knocked over during gaming by some dumb kid, and snapped in half, twice. What a thick gooseberry fool.

Have you seen the End Times models (Nagash, Glottkin, etc)? They are amazing. I disagree on them tending to be troops.

I know what you mean about the metal ones being nice with the weight though. Satisfying. But so many of our models just aren't possible in metal. The Heldrake is one of my favourite kits and it just wouldn't be possible to make it out of metal.

We've got one of the limited edition metal Thunderhawks. That weights an absolute strawberry floating tonne.

I'm toying with an idea, but not sure if its worth pursuing or not.

Basically, I want to build and paint models, but not play the game.
You see people selling painted models on eBay and such, but does any one ever buy them?

I don't want a load of miniatures lying around, I just want to build, paint, get rid, repeat..

I'm clearing out my 40k stuff and selling on ebay.

Quickly finished off this guy last night. I'd started him 5+ years ago, and he'd been in a box since then.

So I've taken to playing the x-wing miniature game. Still only have a few ships but it's great fun. Simple enough that anyone can play without reading a thick rule book yet complex enough that there is great scope for strategy!

I imagine the market is for either unpainted/unassembled models or stuff thats really, really well done. If you're average then people are likely to just paint stuff themselves. Another route i've seen is painting stuff to order - they send you the models and you do them to specifications etc.

Depends how good you are and what models you do.

10 German WW2 SS in pea dot camo at 28mm costs £15 from warlord, sells everytime for £50.

Ain't done it on ebay yet, due to fees etc.

Tanks don't sell too well, back in the 40k days, sold a fair few Space marine standard tactical squads.

I'm no "pro painter", but peeps are lazy, finding something they don't want to paint and doing it fast and looking decent and they'll pay. Thus why I occasionally do SS, or British paras, they're fan favs in the WW2 scene and have shitty annoying camo that folk don't like.

Got me one of these Otherworld Giants:

He's significantly taller (and cooler IMO) than GW's Giant, and reminds me of my old Marauder Giant from the 90s which was my favourite mini at that time :)

Hoping to field him in some future games of Kings of War.

Decided to start my own gaming table.

6 by 4, standard size.

I don't have the space to make a solid gaming area so I've designed it out to be stored in a box.

going WW2 theme, and due to have an interest in the Eastern front and having a huge Soviet force that's what I'm basing it on, but hopefully by changing little things it should be able to turn out a French country side setting too.

So I managed to find a second hand GWS grass 6x4 mat, these things go for crazy prices these days, brand new in the box people want £50+, mine is second hand but in great condition. It will be the base for everything to go on.

I've bought some 4ground stuff, a Russian farm house, outhouse and shed, plus a gooseberry fool tonne of fencing which I've based up with basic tuffs of grass.

Next on the list is fields, I'm going with carpet tiles from B&Q, very cheap and good like ploughed fields, add in some Model mates weathering spray inks, (browns) to bring out some depth and texture and this will give me the option of making the table modular.

Then roads, or dirty tracks.

Most expensive part will be trees, going to stick with 4ground, after seeing their trees first hand I'm going with them.

Once I've got the Eastern front look done, I can then look into doing a western front setting, mostly different types of trees, replacing knackered fencing with stone walls and obviously western european housing.

Anyone else have their own gaming table?

I don't have a gaming table but please post lots of photo updates as you build it.

Sometimes, building something like this can actually be a lot more enjoyable than the game itself....

You better be taking pics and posting them here during your build!

Photo Dump!

here's a selection of the fencing and outhouses I've got so far for the gaming table.

The fencing and outhouses, require basing in my opinion, but you don't need to. For me I wanted to so they tie in better. The 2 outhouses are based on plasticard, PVA, fine sand, brown wash, 3 coats of brown until I get the colour I want, then grass and some tuffs. only a few posted, I actually have strawberry float tonnes of fences.

Also some other stuff i've been working on, last 2 weeks no car so no going out, so did some painting.

Early war Soviet BT series tank platoon, and some support units for my 92nd Buffalo Soldiers, white scout car is still awaiting some decals.

I've got a Russian farm house for the Gaming table which I'm not going to base, I don't think I need it.

Currently designing roads/tracks, this again is plasticard and plenty of sand PVA and dry brushing.

So about this time last year I decided to do a 44/45 late war Soviet army for Bolt Action.

A year later and it's finished.

Based fairly close to historically organised tank armies of the time in the USSR. This is a Brigade, quite small in the grand scheme of things when it comes to the huge numbers in the Red Army, this would only be a fraction of the T34's deployed in each battalion, corp, army. But for the scale, 28mm, this is about as much as I want to go.

Attached is a company of infantry, officer and political officer in a jeep. Assault gun in the form of an ISU-122, technically speaking there should be a second one as they were usually paired up in assault platoons. 2 small units of assault engineers in lend leased Bren Carriers to clear mines and fix bridge heads etc and lastly a recon platoon of Gaz 64's. Oh and a female sniper with body guard, can't have Heroes of the soviet union being killed, doesn't make for good reading in Pravda!

Really enjoyed this wee project, for those who play Bolt Action this is 5.5k in points.
