Oli Welsh's opinion piece is frankly bizarre. He seems not to have enjoyed previous showcases where Sony revealed games early (as though that's against the spirit of the show, or something), nor does he like the fact that Sony may be showing PS5 games even though nothing that was shown was far and away better than what we've seen released on a PS4/Pro up to this point. And his complaint about a lack of release dates would be justified if Sony hadn't released most of their first-party games in a timely fashion.

Sony's E3 event has been widely criticized across the board it's not just one journo from Eurogamer who didn't enjoy it, IGN and Polygon weren't fans either.

If winning E3 came down purely to the presentation of the conference then Microsoft won by a country mile.

If it's down to who showed the best looking exclusives then it's Sony.

If it's down to who's entire lineup makes you want to stick your console on eBay, it's Nintendo.

Not disagreeing, I went on a tirade when Sony had an interval after a single trailer at the beginning, terrible terrible idea.At the end I was left questioning why they showed so few big third party games despite all the marketing deals.

When it comes to big exclusives, Last of Us 2, Death Stranding, Tsushima and Spiderman Vs Halo Infinity, Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 4 then Sony still wins for me.

For the reasons stated by Welsh, or because they dared to do something different with the format? I didn't enjoy Sony's show anywhere near as much as previous years (I'm a sucker for a surprise), and I think MS "won" this year, between the 2 of them, but Welsh is flitting between paranoia and old man complains at clouds.

MS with the best conference (though Ubi was fun), Sony with the best exclusives (Spider-Man) and Nintendo have the Treehouse coming, so can hopefully salvage something. Pretty disappointing E3 overall, suppose MS and Sony are putting a lot of their resources into next-gen already.

A lot of it? There are almost 200 games on Game Pass, of which 14 are currently available for PC.

I didn't know that! Is there a list somewhere?

We just had this conversation in the Game Pass thread! The Xbox website lists them all, but doesn't say which ones are on PC. The Windows Store is obviously a mess. There's a convoluted method to see all titles using the TrueAchievements website, I'll copy it from that thread.

There aren't a lot, to be honest.

This is a really difficult one. Sony's presser was bloody awful in execution; what on earth was that intermission? But, and it's a big but, the content on display was fantastic. The Last Of Us looks outstanding; retaining and building upon the brutal gameplay seen in the last iteration. Sword Of Tsushima has an incredible aesthetic and what looks like an engaging and varied combat mechanic. Spiderman continues to amaze and Death Stranding is certainly intriguing. There were few surprises, but Nioh 2 and the RE2 reveal were nice to see.

MS's effort was outstanding in it's pacing and the sheer amount of games on display. Gears Of War looked really solid and could well be a system seller. Forza was very impressive and Ori was enchanting. However, I honestly feel that their situation is still pretty dire in the short term. Many of the exclusives on show were the same tent pole titles and that didn't sit well with me. Sequels are great, but when you'e on to the 5th, 6th or 7th iteration of a franchise the excitement levels, for me at least, tend to wane. Unless they are significant reinventions and I couldn't see evidence of this. There are positives here, such as the studio acquisitions, but a number of those were already heavily entrenched in the MS echo system and the fruitsof the more notable take over announcements, are possibly 2 to 5 years off. This is not great for a console brand that is having very obvious and public struggles with exclusive content. I do feel that this showing was too reliant of third party titles and the arrogance and ignorance of some of Spencer's comments did grate. Such as the time he stated that Xbox was the place to be, to play the best games. I'm paraphrasing and of course he would put a positive spin on things, but his espousing of such a statement is clearly a fallacy. I think MS is securing their future in terms of exclusives, but as I've alluded to, the short term future, especially 2018, is looking poor. Without serious hardware discounting, I think they're going to have very difficult Christmas this year.

Nintendo's was pretty bad; they spent far to long on Smash and I have never "got" this series. There are lots of well regarded games that I don't get on with, but I can see their appeal, even if I don't enjoy them. This isn't the case with Smash, I think it is genuinely terrible. The rest of what was on show was solid if uninspiring.

Taking all of this into account, I would say that MS has by far the better conference, but does that really matter when your content isn't as good as your closest competitor? I would say not, thus, Sony wins, but they really need to get a handle on their future showings.

You seriously have a problem with the head of Xbox saying Xbox is the best place to play games?

Chill man.

As an aside I also can't get on with Smash bros, its utter wank.

I don't but it isn't really true. PC is.

Yes, when they've had such a drought of exclusives. I just think it would be wise to avoid such statements until they've addressed their obvious shortcomings in this regard.

You could argue he made the statement as a whole going forward but fairy nuff if he's triggered PS4 owners.

Haha, I just think it's a misguided thing to say with things as they are. The future absolutely looks brighter, but maybe save such hubris for then....?

I'm pretty sure he said it after the studio announcements but I could be wrong, either way it's amusing me that you sat watching it seething at that sentence.

I've watched several playstation conferences in the past and they said lots of stuff that was biased but it was Sony talking at a Sony event...perfectly reasonable.

Not seething, but it didn't sit well, I think I actually chuckled when he said it. I have highlighted how God awful the execution Sony's presentation was, they are by no means perfect.

Yeah I agree with this. Really disappointed by how bad Nintendo are at the moment and really want some games that aren't remasters/ poor ports. I don't particularly want inferior versions of Dark Souls or Fifa, although can see the attraction with playing fifa on the go. To spend so much time on Smash Bros was a bit ridiculous!

To me it just seemed Microsoft had to show up and show something, even if the best games they showed were all multiplatform titles!

For me, this was the worst E3 in recent history.

For me it's the worst since 2012 and a sign that this generation is certainly in it's final years.

I expect 2019 to be equally as drab until next-gen is unveiled in 2020.

The thing I liked least about the MS conference (and this is likely just me) is the whole 'we're working on our new machine' They just (exaggeration) released their mid-gen upgrade. I think a new Gen, in like2 years, is way too soon, personally.

7 months, is that right? I agree, it's not the cheapest piece of kit, so talking about the next one is a bit gooseberry fool for people who have just invested.

If the PS5/XB2 come out November 2020 I'll have had my X1X (and the most powerful console) for 3 years. Doesn't seem too bad tbh.
