Using it is fine, just don't be making a bunch of smoke. Not knowing how much smoke was involved makes it difficult to assign blame, but neighbors should be neighborly.

Could no effort have been made to make a windbreak of some kind, or find a position for the BBQ where the smoke would be carried off in a less harmful direction?

I wasn’t there Alvin!

From what I gather it wasn’t all that smoky, the neighbour was pissed off because he could smell it. I only have one side of the story of course, but it didn’t sound like it was a towering inferno, just a normal barbecue.

If it's only the smell then the neighbor just needs to make some BBQ of his own to sate his obvious hunger for the stuff, or your friend should be more neighborly and invite him over.

If the neighbor hates the smell, well, it's not like it's weed, cigs or a meth lab, it's just food cooking. It's the smell of summertime in some parts. The neighbor will just have to deal with it in that case.

If it was proper smoke, that changes things and the onus should be on your friend to get a chimney or something.

The fact you spelt it “neighborly” makes your opinion invalid. Stick to the US politics forum.

One of my student neighbours last summer liked to have BBQs on the roof (great view up there, BTW) usually for breakfast or lunch. On a relatively windy day the smoke would blow quite considerably across the garden. As it only lasted about 40 minutes and he was one of these Caribbean blokes in a constant chilled out state (and going by the recycling bin, Malibued off his tits), it didn’t bother me.

I had the immediate urge to plant a palm tree and some sand but then he left and it passed.

As much as it sickens me to say it, I'm with Karl.

It doesn't matter how much you like barbecues, or how sunny it is. You haven't got any right to pollute someone else's environment.

If I was the neighbour, I'd randomly masturbate and fling the jizz through Moggy's friend's open windows.

If you're using gas, you aren't barbecuing. You're just cooking outside.

What about people who live near restaurants? Do they have the right to get the restaurant shut down if they can smell food cooking?

While i don't like barbecues, around here the main problem tends to be bonfires.

Every time i open my window during the summer (when temperatures in here can reach 30C easily), some moron is kicking out a load of smoke and my house always ends up filled with someone elses stink. Not too long ago, one of the morons on my street decided to buy one of those bin shaped waste incinerators and were using it to burn all sorts of toxic crap.

Filling other people's homes with fumes is a dickish thing to do, and people who do this sort of stuff should be dragged out into the street and shot.

No. If someone moves near to an existing restaurant, that is their choice, and they have no justification for complaint. If a new restaurant applies to open nearby, they have the right to appeal against it. I'm not sure what the laws are regarding jizz.

So it’s ok for the smell to go inside the neighbours house, but not near his washing line?

He should close the windows I'm sure where has windows on both sides of the house.

gooseberry fool how much smoke can there be it is a BBQ not a bonfire he is being a little bitch.

If his washing was out it is a bit inconsiderate to fire up a bonfire or BBQ, the decent thing to do is say hi we are planning on having a BBQ at X time so they can get they pants in.

You can't bitch about someone having a BBQ it's pathetic.
