A friend of mine had a barbecue yesterday and then had an argument with his neighbour.

The neighbour was upset because the smoke from the barbecue was blowing into his house. Because of the hot weather, the neighbour had his windows open and was annoyed that his house was being filled with smoke.

My friend is adamant that he has the right to barbecue in his garden if he wants and that the neighbour should shut his windows if he doesn’t like it.

So GR, whose side are you on?

If it was legit smoke I would be pissed off. Shouldnt be smoking up the place that badly if you are doing it right.

If it was just the legit smell of delicious barbecue Id be pissed off because I wasnt invited.

I wasn’t there so I’ve no idea how smoky it actually was.

I’d usually stick up for a mate, but as I wasn’t at the barbecue.... :x

Having a BBQ now-and-again seems pretty reasonable. My pal's neighbours have one every day. *EVERY* day :dread: .

We need to have a "moderate" option for people like me who can't really decide. Yes and No ;) .

If it was actual smoke I assume he was using a coal barbeque and is yet more proof that gas is the answer for civilised people.

I wondered how many responses it would take before we got onto coals versus gas  .

A man has the right to barbecue whenever he wants.

The neighbours should close their windows if the smoke is blowing in.

I thought it’d end up there within a few posts. We’ll have to post Hank Hill propane pictures before page 2.

I don't know if anyone is right, but I would say that the smell of barbecue wafting in through an open window is Ok but smoke coming in is not acceptable.

It doesn't sound like your friend is maliciously directing his smoke into his neighbours' houses, so unless he deliberately moved his barbecue as close to his neighbours' windows as possible, he's not in the wrong. Advance warning earlier in the day, and keeping your barbecue away from the windows, is usually enough.

In general, the onus is on you to not annoy your neighbours.

"Don't like my BBQ? Shut your windows!" is the same as "Don't like my music? Wear earplugs!" or "Don't like the smell of weed coming through your floorboards? Spray some Febreeze!"

Yes, you're "allowed" to have a BBQ or listen to music or 420 blaze it in your home/garden, but you should make an honest effort to do so in a way that doesn't bother the people around you.

Hate to break it to you Moggy but if your friend's neighbour's house was legit being "filled with smoke" then it sounds like your friend is, in fact, a prick. Sorry you had to find out this way. :(

A man has a right to be in his own home without having his neighbour's smoke blowing in.

It's not as if central air or air conditioning is super common there, he probably can't shut his windows and enjoy cool air through the warmer months.

I never had Karl down as a barbecue hating killjoy.

As I said I wasn’t there so don’t know how smoky it was, but I don’t think it would have been so bad that the neighbours house would have been literally filled with smoke. From what I gather it was the smell of the smoke/barbecue that set the neighbour off, not actual smoke pouring in.

The reason I started the thread is because I’m not 100% sure whose side I’m on. I absolutely think people have the right to have a barbecue in their own gardens, but I can also see that the smell of smoke/barbecue could be annoying.

I think that as long as it’s not every day, it is pretty inconsiderate to expect your neighbour to not use their garden for a summer barbecue. The easiest solution is to shut your windows if it’s irritating you.

I was thinking the same. The neighbour should have hosed down the barbecue from his side of the fence. "Take your barbecue inside if my water is bothering you".

Using it is fine, just don't be making a bunch of smoke. Not knowing how much smoke was involved makes it difficult to assign blame, but neighbors should be neighborly. It's easy to not make smoke on a hot day, it's hard to avoid it if you don't have central air or a/c and need your windows open to not roast to death.

Could no effort have been made to make a windbreak of some kind, or find a position for the BBQ where the smoke would be carried off in a less harmful direction?

Does the neighbor have breathing issues like asthma?

That neighbor, Sue Godfirnon, has filed 14 complaints against the Matts since September 2014, according to Bay News 9. She is also suing them, claiming that the smoke from the grill is poisoning her, according to Tampa Bay ABC affiliate WFTS.

“This smoke permeates my house, and causes me to have health problems, including chest pains and asthma attacks,” Godfirnon wrote in a February email to the county. “I am virtually a prisoner in my own home.”

She also provided a photo of a carbon monoxide detector in her home that shows a reading of 170 parts per million, a concentration that can cause headaches, fatigue and nausea, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
