So 'waggle' is literally just a term someone employs when there's a motion control they don't like. I wish I'd known that! Skyward Sword was no good because of all the waggle. 8-)

Waggle is used to imply that the required motion has little or no correlation with the action being performed and it is literally simply being used in lieu of a button press.

In DKCr, i had significant difficulty unlearning years spent playing Donkey Kong Country and would often walk right off the edges of platform, simply because the timing on the roll is different between pressing a digital button and the trigger time for waggling the wiimote. My defect, but it infuriated me no end.

There's literally no reason to dislike the shake to double-jump in SMG though, it was perfectly responsive, easy to do, and considering the controller was very different to hold compared to previous 3D Mario control setups, intuitive enough to perform. Whereas with DKCR the control setup can be almost the same as the classic DKC games so it's harder to modify one's behaviour.

I had no problem with waggling in Super Mario Galaxy or DKCR.

I could understand it being annoying for DKCR if you were trying to get all the speed medals. I didn't do that at all. My first play through, I pretty much played the game without rolling at all, K temples and Banana Temple, everything bar the speed trials. I didn't ever get killed it by it being unresponsive in my second play through.

The jump extension mapped to the waggle in Super Mario Galaxy was 100% accurate for me. There is a cool down to it, waggling the strawberry float out of the controller is going to be unresponsive if you don't account for that.

I really wanted to get a Wii and had my name down on the waiting list at Gamestation. I really liked the SNES (probably my favourite console) and didn't find the N64 or GC anywhere near as enjoyable. Analysing this further, it is probably due to the lack of 3rd party games that were available to them.

Anyway, after waiting a damn long time I dropped in at Gamestation to see how I was getting on in the queue, only to be told that I'd got to the front but they couldn't contact me so sold my allocation to someone else. :x

I was utterly strawberry floated off by this after having waited so long so switched my pre-order to a pre-order for the PS3 (which I had gained some interest in due to reading an Edge article).

I did eventually get a Wii sometime later as a Christmas present for my kids (thanks to a colleague who had a friend at Game that put one aside for me) but after the mighty PS3, the Wii didn't really interest me so due to the delay in getting one and having a PS3 by the time we did, I feel like I missed out on the Wii experience.

Hoping to put this right, I bought a Wii U on release and although it was fairly enjoyable at the start (bar ridiculous updates and slow navigation through menus) it didn't really attract the games I wanted or have the slick on-line features of the PS3 so other than a few games I've played on it, has for most of its life collected dust.

Quite a shame really, Nintendo went from my favourite console manufacturer to my least. At this moment in time, the prospect of me buying another Nintendo console is very unlikely.

Yes?

It's interesting reading all of your different views... I suspected that there would be quite a divide - the Wii seems to generate huge variances of opinion.

A few other llttle features of the machine that I enjoy are the blue light disc slot, the Wii Shop music (it brings about a zen-like trance!), Mario running along and jumping into blocks whilst a game downloads, the Everybody Votes! channel (I enjoyed it because it was completely daft), the wonderful array of excellently emulated VC titles, amd the build and design quality of the console itself - it has an almost Apple-like sleekness about it.

I've given up trying to understand the tastes of people who like playing games but don't like playing Nintendo games

I mean it's evidently a legitimate stance but just one I can't understand because Nintendo make so many great games across a multitude of genres.

Yeah there's the platformer, the kart racer and... and...

I legitimately can't think of anything else

EDIT: fire emblem devs are practically nintendo owned so you can have srpg too

What exactly do you mean by "nintendo games"? I personally cannot get into 2d platformers - I tried Tropical Freeze, NSMB, the lot, and lasted a couple of levels before near-terminal ennui set in. I do not give a gooseberry fool about what I think of as "nintendo" games; Mario, DK, Starfox and to some extent Zelda etc. I am aware of their importance and reputation, however I have no interest in playing them. All the stuff I played on the Wii and Wii U was only because they were exclusives that weren't available anywhere else: Sin and Punishment, Disaster Day of Crisis, F-Zero and the like; all of which I'm now emulating out of a desire to play them again and not out of any form of brand loyalty. I've thought about playing Mario Galaxy on dolphin but then I remembered the above point; it'd be cool to get working and looking great but then I wouldn't actually want to play it.

You couldn't think of Zelda or Smash Bros or Metroid?

You couldn't think of Zelda or Smash Bros?

Smash bros is rubbish and I thought of zelda as a platformer given all the jumping puzzles in the last two zelda games I played.

If you go by "action-adventure" and then include basically every 3d non-platformer ever then zelda's been way down the pack for the majority of my life

I had anticipated some diverse opinions... but not that "Smash Bros is rubbish" and "Zelda is a platformer" would be bandied about  .

So what I mean is if someone is a fan of action adventure games, for example, I can't see how they wouldn't like Zelda. If someone is a shooter fan, surely they should enjoy Splatoon. Relevant to the Wii era, FPS fans should probably find some enjoyment in Metroid Prime (although I'll accept that they verge on exploration more than shooting). There are Nintendo games at the top end of plenty of genres. 2D and 3D platformers are obvious, with Mario being what everyone thinks of. Racing - Mario Kart. TRPG - Fire Emblem. More classical RPG fans can find some of the best in the genre from this gen and last gen only on Nintendo consoles, despite not being Nintendo games - Xenoblade/X, The Last Story and TWEWY for example. Fighting fans should probably enjoy Super Smash Brothers.

I think that you have to be quite specific in your gaming tastes to avoid some crossover with Nintendo exclusives, and yet a disproportionate number of people appear to be disinterested in Nintendo consoles considering that.

After owning a SNES, N64 and GC I was looking forward to the Wii… until I found out about the control mechanism. In terms of innovation, it’s incredible. But it just didn’t do anything for me. I can’t say I don’t like it as I’ve never truly put in enough time in any game aside from Wii Sports to say so, but it just didn’t excite or interest me. As a result I kind of fell out of love with gaming and stopped following the releases and news around 2007. I still have my GC and game collection (of about 25 or so titles) which I occasionally take out of the cupboard but now do most of my limited gaming through my PC via Steam and emulators.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Okay it's an action/adventure or metroidvania

Now let's get back to talking about how it hasn't changed in a decade, which is the fundamental problem the wii had. Sure most nintendo series are good but how many times do you really want to play a game with a few tweaks. There's a surprising crossover between fans of zelda here and people whining about Asassins' Creed being samey in that thread

What the strawberry float are you doing, Irene?

There's been 3 mainline Zelda games in the last 10 years, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds. The 3 couldn't be more different for 3 games set in the same franchise.

Not to mention that there's been 20,0000,000 AC's in the last month.

Sorry, I thought we're all talking gooseberry fool like Irene.
