I've been using PCSX2 myself recently. The sound slowdown thing is due to it being tied to the framerate. You can however change this to asynchronous mode from the sound plugin settings, making the speed independent, although this can apparently screw things up for some games. Its made things much better for Silent Hill 2 though, where the sound would distort with every other door I went through.

I see CoolROM seems to have been completely gutted of ROMs.

So I've just discovered OpenEmu. For years I've been put off by limiting my retro gaming to what's available on the Virtual Console, XBLA, PSN or compilation discs, as I was avoiding the hassle of getting old consoles hooked up to newer TVs, and quite frankly don't have the room around the TV for them. I feel so stupid now because this makes it all so ridiculously easy. Got a couple of USB megadrive-style controllers, a HDMI cable to connect the MacBook up to the TV and been enjoying some Road Rash :D

That sounds great. I miss playing NBA Jam on my macbook with my best mate from uni, we'd play for hours.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Seems that I have come to say the same thing as everyone else - discovered Openemu this weekend and it's awesome. The interface is good looking and all the roms I've tried so far have worked brilliantly. Currently I'm playing with my PS3 dual shock and it works great.

Openemu inspired me to try out Dolphin, which is working great on my Retina 13-inch. Finally getting to play Xenoblade Chronicles.

Openemu does spoil all other emulators though. On Mac it appears there's no particularly decent N64 or Dreamcast emulators, which is a real shame.

I don't know why they keep it hidden away, but there's an experimental version of OpenEmu on their website which includes support for more consoles. On the download button, there's one of those downward pointing arrow symbols that reveals a drop down list, and it's in there. It has N64 in there and it seems to work pretty great. There's also Saturn support but unfortunately you can see why that was left out of the main release and most games don't seem to work on it.

Attention!

Rogue Leader is now playable on Dolphin. I just spent the last two hours shooting through the main 10 missions. I spent so long playing this as a kid that I remember the general structure of the missions so it wasn't too difficult for me, but it as exceptionally enjoyable! I remember spending ages trying to beat the Battle of Endor as a kid but I managed to get a silver medal on my first attempt today :datass:

The game now runs at 60FPS with occasional drops in space battles. Land based missions fare a bit worse, with one hovering around the 50FPS mark. Overall, I had a great time playing the whole game and completing it this afternoon. It's by no means perfect but it's a huge improvement given that it was literally unplayable before today.

They really don't make them like this anymore

After some initial teething problems (basically not understanding the need to upgrade my Arts) I'm enjoying Xenoblade. Just got by the Mechon with a face for the first time. Not sure that I was doing chain attacks right as the battle seemed to take me an age, despite going like for like colour.

The gods people behind Dolphin just keep on giving. The latest blog post outlines a game modification that involves 60FPS hacks. As a result, we can now see Super Mario Sunshine running at 60 FPS.

I'm now tempted to try to play Sunshine again.

Need to check this out. Apparently they've fixed the Hyrule Field problems with Twilight Princess as well.

Urge to replay.... rising....

I downloaded Dolphin and then downloaded Twilight Princess from emuparadise. It came as a .rar and I'm aware it needs to be a .iso.

Could someone please tell me the best way to convert a .rar into a .iso? Preferably in simple terms... :slol:

A RAR is compressed file archive, like a ZIP file. You need to get a program that can UnRAR the file and let you access the juicy .iso contained within. WinRAR is probably the best bet. It's free and integrates into windows so you can just right click on the file you want to extract and choose "Extract here" or "Extract to <RAR NAME>".

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/winrar-x64-520.exe - 64bit version
http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar520.exe - 32bit version

As for Twilight Princess, it's been a while since I played it on Dolphin, but I know that Hyrule Field absolutely destroyed the framerate. Might be better now, but just something to be aware of.

You're a gent, thank you. :)

No problem.

The first thing you should be installing on any PC is 7zip, which despite the name will definately uncompress RAR files also, and do so conveniently right from the context menu.

7zip installed a load of malware the last time I used it.

I just use a trial version of Winrar, it keeps pestering me about needing to buy the full version but still works fine.

I just installed it using ninite, so even if 7zip tried ninite would disallow everything.

I wasn't feeling well when I was installing it and failed to notice the "uncheck this box to skip installing mysearchdial toolbar" bit in the installer.

Took ages to get rid of it.

I don't believe the .MSI installer package over on http://www.7-zip.org/ has any such box?

Ah OK I'll check this out, cheers.

Is there a good place to go to find out the best settings to use, either in general or on a peer game basis? I've had a quick look on the PCSX2 forums but there doesn't seem to be anything to clear/definitive.
