Aren't the retroarch guys kind of twats and caused another hobbyist emulator to kill himself last year, too?

Anywho, now I have a beefy PC I'm going to be looking into GC/WiiU emulation quite soon - is Dolphin still the place to go for that? Would love a nice shiny playthrough of Metroid Prime.

Also any tips as to decent places to acquire copies of roms/isos of games I already own would be greatly appreciated.

You mean Near? I thought that was related to K*wif*rms? At least I hope it wasn't to do with the Retroarch guys... :dread:

And yes, Dolphin is the place to go for GC/Wii stuff. WiiU would be Cemu.

If you do got for a Prime playthrough then I would definitely recommend checking out the PrimeHack fork of Dolphin: https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-f ... roid-prime

Basically turns it into a modern twin stick or mouse controlled input system (though you can still play it retro style if you want) and applies a bunch of mods/fixes to improve the overall experience.

I'm playing through Trilogy on the Steam Deck with it at the moment and it's so damned good! :datass:

Nice, this is exactly the sort of gooseberry fool I was looking for, thanks so much!

Twinstick metroid prime sounds so cool.

Been playing some SSX3 via PCSX2 over the last few days. 4K with 8x anti-aliasing, 16x anisotropic filtering and runs at a flawless 60fps... except for parts of Metro City where the framerate completely tanks!
Been having a great time with it. What an absolute classic. Absolutely infuriating at times. Love it to bits when I'm not tearing my hair out.

While I have been enjoying SSX3 there is a fair amount of input lag. It was mostly fine while playing SSX3, but I decided to give Amplitude (a rhythm game) a shot and... it's basically unplayable.
Anyone know if there's a way to fix this input lag issue on PCSX2? Is there another, better PS2 emulator?

I've found rhythm games really tend not to work too well under emulation unless they have some kind of user definable video/audio lag calibration. Rock Band works reasonably well on Dolphin (I've not given the PS3 or 360 versions a try) and since you can adjust the lag settings, it's not too bad. But other games are very hit and miss. I was never able to get Gitaroo Man working to my satisfaction either, though it's been a while now, so I might give it another go.

PCSX2 is the only real PS2 emulator worth bothering with (On PC at least) and while it's much better than it was even five years ago, it'll probably never be completely free of issues.

Ultimately emulation inherantly introduces a big chunk of input lag and rhythm games live or die by that.

Hope you can sort it out man.

The worst post of it isn't even the lag itself (though it is of course bad), but the inconsistency of the input. If I tap a button really quickly sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it also feels like the amount of input lag changes from one button press to the next, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
Gonna need to do some tests with other controllers I think. See if it feels the same with a different wireless controller, if the controller is plugged in, and also with the keyboard. Maybe try DS4Windows instead of Steam Input.

Fixed the controller issue. Just needed to tick "DInput Input Source" in the controller settings.
Now the controls are super responsive and I'm struggling to comprehend how I found the situation before palatable enough to play through ~90% of SSX3.
Fixing the controls fixed 90% of my problems in Amplitude, and turning off vsync feels like it takes me 5% closer. It's now almost good enough to be enjoyable. If only there was a way to delay the displayed frames (but not the audio or the actual game itself) by 1-2 frames so the audio and video could match up. Or would it have to render ahead? Thinking about latency and latency compensation always does my head in.
Edit: Eh, scratch that. Of course that wouldn't work, as timing my button presses to the music is what gets me the best results. It's the audio being delayed that's causing the issue, and the audio latency settings are already set as low as possible.

I spent all day today converting all my disc based games from .bin/.cue to .chd, and I've manage to free up well over 100gb across my PS1/PS2/DC libraries. Crazy Taxi went from 1gb to 64mb!

Yup, it's bad enough with digital storefronts closing and us losing access to games possibly forever already, without adding some dumb strawberry floating DRM on top of it that means some games will be lost to time forever. I'm sure devs will appreciate people never being able to play their games even long after they're never going to be able to make any money from it.

As I said in the Retro thread, configuring Dolphin on the Steam Deck is currently a pile of wank, so I'm really hoping a proper Steam release will help to streamline things.

Was it Denuvo that Nintendo have employed to add their bloatware to Switch games? Would explain them putting out a booklet, because Nintendo are the only hardware manufacturer where their current system is able to be emulated.

Got a Retroid Pocket 3+ yesterday.

This thing is amazing. Form factor of a Switch Lite but smaller, somewhere between an original GBA and Switch Lite in size. It runs Android and can run up to PS2/Gamecube (you need to pick and choose that era for compatible games, but still works!). Runs PSP at 3x resolution, PS1 upscaled to 720p with widescreen hacks and geometry correction in duckstation (no more PS1 wobble), N64 at 720p with widescreen hacks and everything older than that without any issues! Plus native Android games but you aren't buying this for that.

I've had these emulator handhelds before but this generation of them is something else, especially for the price of £180. Was playing widescreen Wind Waker in bed last night on this dinky wee thing.

Vid for the interested:
