Sounds cool, wonder if Paper Mario would be best moved to that emulator?? The only problem is how will the save get picked up!!!??

RPCS3 barely loads Demon's Souls and crashes constantly. Not unexpected though.

Cemu is a revelation however. Mario 3D World runs flawlessly, Super Mario Maker as well. Full 60fps in most cases.
Currently working through the rest of my games and after some tweaking I'll be putting BOTW through it's paces. If it can handle that then I'm going to be extremely impressed with this.

It runs BOTW and it's very good. Seems to be slightly above the Wii U performance wise at 720p so it's not setting the world on fire, but the fact that it's playable at all is phenomenal. It'll be interesting to see how it goes once you move past the Plateau.

I'm beyond impressed with this PC. Genuinely expected it to choke with Cemu but for it to actually run very well is mind blowing. Might be the best £185 I've spent.

Are you just running your emulation rig as a windows PC and just booting up each Emulator and loading the ROM each time or are you using Retroarch / EmulationStation?

I'd love a simple, controller controlled, GUI for use on something like this. A box that sits under the TV and you just select the console and then the game you want to play without any faff. It might just be me not implementing it properly but I don't get this with RetroArch.

It's a Windows 7 system with Launchbox acting as the frontend for all the emulators and Windows games I have on it. I do need to tweak it though as I just can't get Bigbox (The TV frontend of Launchbox) to run at a nice, snappy pace. I think a faster HDD (Or even an SSD) as well as some more RAM would help it greatly in that regard. At the moment I do tend to just use the windows interface for Launchbox as it's a bit quicker (Strangely). Apparently the Launchbox guys can't explain why some systems seem to run faster than others, even when they should in theory be really quick.

But yes, if I launch it straight into big box I just choose the system and then the game.

I posted the video I based the build on a page or two back ("How to build a polymega killer" Is the name if I remember correctly).

So a lot of the Bigbox performance is down to the theme I use and the number of games I have on the system at any one time. I've currently got 7136 total games available on the system and 10,000 is where performance can take a big hit.

I swapped to the "Fundamental" theme, which is a lot lighter on performance and runs nice and quickly. It also looks pretty nice and I've got custom logos, box art and screenshots for all the games that have them (So far). I've even got Platform videos so when selecting a platform a video plays showing some highlights from the system, which helps bring it to life a good bit.

The most interesting thing I added today though is a small utility I've been wanting to play with for a few weeks now, called Seedi.

Pointed it to my PS2, Mega CD, PS1 and Saturn emulators and it just works. Stuck in Metal Gear Solid 2 and it loaded the emulator and booted straight into the game. Amazing stuff.

Might have to start picking up older CD games now. :D

It works nicely with Bigbox and the emulator closes when you take the disc out. I think I love this little machine.

I've been torn on what to do when making a TV based retro station. Love the idea of a Raspberry Pi 3 build, a PC would be more powerful but I'm not looking to emulate anything further than N64, GPD XD+ Looks like another good option as you can treat it like a hybrid system.

Pi 3 is a good shout but N64 is a mess on it. PS1 is about as far as it can handle. It's a great low cost solution though.

GPD XD+ is a good shout if you value portability and it can handle more intensive emulators up to PSP and Dreamcast. Main problem is its price.

For roughly the same price as a GPD XD+ you can spec out a small form factor PC like the one I'm playing about with that can handle everything up to and including Wii U, as well as PC games. It has far more scope to expand and tweak but it can be a bit more expensive as a result.

I've gone through all 3 in the past year and only does this most recent one feel like I'm not missing out on stuff.

But it's something you need to decide for yourself really.

Thanks for the breakdown! Another option I didn't think about is a TV box like a nvidea shield! Not sure on the price of them but I've heard they're pretty good.

I think I'll look at the pc option. There seems to be loads of ways to approach making one and you're set long term with a PC that's upgradeable.

Anyone got experience with cloud saves for your games and syncing them to your other emulation devices? Just wondering how effect it is.

I have an nVidia Shield and personally wouldn't advise it, you get more for your money with PC and Android just isn't as good as windows for emulation. I mainly use mine for Streaming from my Main PC upstairs to my TV in the lounge as well as video content.

It's the best TV box by miles, but not the best emulation machine for the price point.

My pc absolutely spanks emulation and I was thinking of trying streaming dolphin to it (the tv has steam link built in). Then I found out you can get a version of dolphin that you can actually install in the tv itself! Fuuuuck I've got to try it

Assuming it's an Android based TV that's a very good point. I'd be interested to see how it goes.

EDIT: Kind of related, but you can sideload Retroarch onto Kindle Fire TV sticks. Can handle all the same stuff a Raspberry Pi can as well. Handy if you want a small portable system.

I've heard the TV sticks are pretty good at emulation too. Amazon is about to release a new stick next month which is designed for 4k. It has a 1.7ghz quadcore processor. An upgrade from the current 1.3ghz. With that extra oomph I wonder if it will be more capable than a Pi 3 B+?

It's set to retail for £50.

Possibly. CPU grunt tends to be far more important to emulators than anything else so I would expect it to be a bit more capable than the previous versions. How it will compare to the Pi 3B+ I don't know though. I've got the basic Pi 3B and the bump from that to the + isn't really anything to write home about. It's certainly not enough to upgrade over.

I'm not entirely sure how well a current Amazon Fire stick runs, though I do have a spare one kicking around the house. Probably something I'll take a look at once I've moved on from my PC build. If this new one is a substantial performance improvement I might look at that as well.

I've got one of the original Fire Sticks, it can barely run the FireOS anymore. Wouldn't want to think what might happen if I tried putting emulators on it.

How do people find Dolphin? I've been testing it recently to try and get the best settings possible and I'm struggling with a few things. Sound is often poor and I get some weird dips in performance at times. I'm not sure if this is just how the games were or if I couldn't change some settings to improve it.

My PC has a Ryzen 2700X, 16GB RAM and a GTX 1080ti, so it shouldn't be struggling.

The dips in performance might be v-sync related - I've found that if some games goes to 59.99999fps then for some reason it gets thrown down to 30 for a couple of seconds which is pretty noticeable.

Yeah you absolutely shouldn't be suffering any major dips in performance with that kind of set up.

What Trelliz said about Vsync might be the case. What types of dips are we talking? If it's a lot of stuttering when it's loading assets during gameplay then you might want to check your shader settings as they can be really annoying on certain games.

Asynchronous (Ubershaders) and 'Compile Shaders Before Starting' being the best options right? As to be honest I've gotten similar stutters on some games, which I put down to those titles still having issues.

This can be weirdly incongruous with the Dolphin Wiki rankings though, for instance MGS Twink Snakes is down as being perfect yet I get nasty stutters whenever any kind of 'action' happens in game (getting spotted, firearm going off etc)

I got bad stuttering on Metroid Prime 3 but asynchronous and compiling before starting helped. But yeah different games will have different quirks.

I do think the reputation of Dolphin's amazing progress perhaps sets expectations a bit unrealistically, I was certainly in for a rude awakening upon learning there's still likely to be numerous quirks, some more easily solved than others.

When it comes together though, oh my  Such a treat to finally play so many of these games with decent image quality
