PostWii Play (so you don't have to)
by Hero of Canton » Sun Jun 14, 2009 9:33 pm

http://www.wiiwii.tv/2009/06/14/wii-pla ... t-have-to/

It’s been mooted for a while, but Nintendo has finally confirmed it will be introducing a new help system to assist gamers when they’re stuck on a particularly difficult bit.

Rather than video-based hints or walkthroughs or a DVD-style chapter-skip, however, players will simply be able to pause the action and select an option which sees the game play itself - completing any tough sections and allowing the player to regain control at any time thereafter.

This generation, Nintendo’s mantra has been all about reducing the barriers of entry for non-gamers and less experienced players, and so this is a sensible and logical next step. And as the tentatively-named “demo play” is merely optional, it’s only the weak-willed whose play experience is going to suffer.

The feature will be introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and will likely be used in all future first-party titles. Should Galaxy 2 have any challenges rivalling Luigi’s Purple Coins in the difficulty stakes, temptation might just be too great for me to resist pressing pause for a computer-controlled leg-up.

I know people are all for making games more like movies but really...

More games should have that option.

I'm all for this actually. It's not as if you HAVE to use it. I've stopped playing many a game simply because I've got stuck and lost the will to carry on.

I think it's a fantastic idea.

The idea is sound, but it seems like a step too far to me.

Nor do we need to scour the net for guides.

This could work, but only if there's penaitiy of using it or such. For example, you won't be able to get 100% on a level or such if you used it.

Either way, this is rather good idea for those who just wants to play for fun. I probably wouldn't use it (unless I'm really annoyed and I just want to get past that pesky bit) but if people want to use it, go ahead.

1. It's not for "us".
2. Maybe this means they won't be afraid to make it really hard.

Why? You don't have to use it if you don't want to. As I say, it's only the weak-willed whose gameplay experience is going to suffer.

Exactly my thoughts.

I think for Zelda I'd prefer more of a hint system, as working something out can still feel good just with a little prod in the right direction. For Mario though I could see it being good for for those frustrating bits.

Its a great idea and a true technological breakthrough. I've always argued, why the hell should you ever become wholly stuck in a game you've invested a not inconsiderable amount of money in ? You don't suddenly get stuck on page 256 of war and peace completely unable to read anymore; you don't ever get stuck half way through a dvd. Its a great step forward for video-games in becoming a more widely accepted form of culture. The only people against this will be those who want to keep their hobby as a minority recreation - but those days are over.

Nah, its the weak-willed hardcore that will be annoyed by this. I think its a great idea, just like I thought with the hint systems in Broken Sword DS and Layton.

Unfortunately, as much as I like to struggle through myself and be forced to do it, the fact I could be a button press away from getting the answer is sometimes too tempting. Spoilt a few puzzles in Layton and the best new puzzle in BS that way.

God if I hadn't used plenty of hint coins left right and centre in Layton I'd still be struggling through now !!
