Aren't those Xbox sales the bigger news here? Those figures are atrocious.

Considering it's in the wake of a cheaper console bundle being announced, and prior to said cheaper console bundle going on sale, I'm surprised anyone would consider it news. Surely it was inevitable.

If you say so, but any way you look at it those sales are diabolical and I can't see it being put down to that alone. There have been good bundles in the US as there have been here.

Also I don't know what the hell happened but the NPD before this one had the Vita at 3k sales. :?

They had games.

If Nintendo didn't have such a strong showing at E3, I'd have been worried they were planning on ditching the system, but evidently it has a future, and as long as Nintendo support it, in the long term the system should come good. Everything else is just gravy.

I think E3 buzz has to help a little, but there's no doubt about the task it faces. After 19 months on sale in the US, the Gamecube had sold 4.01 million. After 19 months on sale in the US, the Wii U has sold 2.35 million. I imagine it's similarly bad in Japan with how much console sales have dropped there.

I am not sure how this would benefit anyone. It seems a pretty silly suggestion.

For Nintendo, there is the cost of shifting development to another console and getting that new console out and ready for a 2016 launch. Even if the Wii U was a moderate success, 2016 would probably the very earliest you would expect a new system. Most last five years at least.

You have the risk that the new console, arriving midway through a generation, is either a) only as powerful as existing machines or b) is more powerful than the XB1 and PS4, but more expensive. Will people spend £400 on a new Nintendo console midway through a generation? If MS and Sony are making noises about theirs?

You also have the gamble that the install base for this new console in 2016 will probably still be lower than that of the Wii U's in 2015. Unless the new console sold well, they would just be releasing games for a console no-one owns.

For gamers there is the added cost of a new system which, if it is the most powerful on the market when it is released, will likely be fairly expensive. The danger is that even the hardcore, Wii U owning customers wince at buying another console, or resent the fact that they "have" to upgrade early due to the Wii U's failure.

Ditching the E3 roster for the Wii U would also make those fans resent the company even further. They would not have supported the system and left it hanging after two years. Why buy another console after that? Where's the incentive that Nintendo wouldn't just pull the plug again.

The most sensible offer is to perhaps accelerate your new console somewhat. The Wii U will likely not have the lifespan of, say, the Wii (six years) or the 360 (8 years). They will likely be developing its successor anyway, but they could rethink their strategy and approach. To learn from your mistakes, rather than to rush another product out the door (which people level at the Wii U itself anyway).

They can support it with a solid level of software, whilst relying on the 3DS and their huge cash reserves to weather them through a rough period on the home console front. The Wii U may end up breaking even anyway.

Has PS4 reached 8 million yet? I was expecting an announcement at E3.

Hard to believe that PS4 is outselling Xbox so much in the USA, that was Microsoft-land last generation!

There is a case to be made for the Wii-U being released too early. Nintendo did nothing with that year lead-time and it's only relatively recently that the system software has begun to take decent shape.

Definitely agree. They had a perfect opportunity with the timing, but simply weren't ready. Imagine if it had launched with Mario 3D World with Mario Kart 8 following soon after? There'd have been a great buzz about the machine-I think a lot more people would have dived straight in, and it would really have gathered momentum.

60K for May US is indeed disappointing but I'm looking forward to seeing the hardware sales in June to see the true Mario Kart effect.

Trying to come back from the poor launch and sales of the 3DS while trying to give the Wii a proper good bye with Skyward Sword and a bunch of kirby games.

Exactly this. The poor initial uptake of the 3DS forced Nintendo to shift a lot of development time over to the system to try to salvage it. People say they should have learnt their lessons from this but I would argue that by the time they had "Saved" 3DS it was too late to apply these lessons to the first 18 months of Wii U. It's only last year they saw the benefits of focusing on 3DS with the wealth of excellent games we got in 2013.

I have no doubt, that had 3DS shot out of the gates and been a moderate success, the Wii U would in all likely hood be in a completely different situation right now. But I'll guess we will never know.

What worries me, is that now they seem to have gone the other way, with a top heavy Wii U line up for 2015 and very littler (that we know of) in the pipeline for 3DS. I'm hoping for a 3DS Direct shortly to calm these fears.

Less than Vita. More than PS4.

Not really sure how to interpret that.
