It's been a long time since I beat zero mission but I don't remember it being linear at all, it is a remake of the first after all.
Samus returns is very linear, you just keep heading down.
Fusion was my first metroid game bought second hand on a whim for my new GBA. I thought from the cart art it was a shmup. I'm glad it wasn't.
