From what I've seen this is true. There is a "star" that leaves the planet in the background when you save them. I might go back and do it myself to check tomorrow. Makes me laugh that they couldn't escape on their own yet somehow pilot a ship away.
Apparently my game is stuffed because you cant go backwards from the last save point.
I don't know a lot about Metroid lore so I'm sure I missed a lot of story bits across the game. I'm not even sure I understand who Ridley Scot and Cheeky Brain were. Or the other bosses in the statue. Were they just beasts? Or important beings?
Despite having a number of frustrations with it I think it holds up really well. Certain things could be better explained and the map could be better. One way doors can go strawberry float themselves and so on. Its hard to but I can imagine why at the time it must have been a big deal. Glad to have added to the list of things I've finally played.
I'd like to make a poster for the game one day.
