If they're very strict then it may drive the development of new, sanitised games to use as e-sports, maybe? Instead of an FPS it would be a paintball game. In an RTS, enemy units just disappear rather than blowing up. And so on. Or maybe those modes could be added to existing e-sport games.

Yeah I am sure they will find ways around it. RTS games will probably be fine, I think they might struggle to get FPS games in though, even if it is just paintball, due to the guns being shown.

It will be hilarious at a future Olympics when the gold medal is won by the person who purchased the most lootboxes thanks to his/her high credit card limit.

At its core a FPS is about hitting other players while avoiding getting hit yourself, the violence is all just flavour and theming, including the idea of even holding a gun. You can apply the same abstraction to probably every game.

I can't imagine the Olympics taking any existing game that is owned by a single developer/publisher and having that as a sport - it would be ridiculous advertising for the game, if nothing else. It doesn't seem to match the Olympic ethos.

I can much more easily imagine the games being developed and skinned specifically for the Olympics.

That or they just play Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. I'd be okay with that
