I'm watching the cup semi-final and just wondered if you think Esports will ever gain the global popularity of the beautiful game?

Personally I have zero interest in Esports but I know it's growing massively and in some countries it really has done well and I think it could well reach the popularity of something like the NFL but not football.

So, thoughts?

Worldwide? no, in the UK? No. In the occasional country? Yes. Depending on your definition of more popular.

I could see eSports becoming massively popular. Young kids in the UK seem to be, generally, watching gaming videos and streams more than sports. I believe that around one million people (worldwide) were watching a certain Fortnite stream the other week? In, say, fifteen years I can see numbers like that being far larger as more people gain access to faster broadband around the world.

People have been kicking a ball around for thousands of years, but modern "football" has only existed for about 200.

Based on that, my prediction is that people will always want to kick a ball around, but that given enough time it might not resemble "football" as we know it today. At some point might it be virtualised? Who knows? I don't see why that's impossible.

Probably not but with football becoming more and more expensive to watch and streaming services for games being so popular, the gap will definitely get smaller.

This

I can see ESports being a trend for a few years then fizzle away seeing as near enough every sport has ESports link to it. Even though GT started it off other sports having it is kinda pointless IMO

I watched that F1 Esport's last year and god the commentor was annoying the whole thing just came across as a gimmick

Thing is, the growth you can't ignore is that of football's itself. It grows in popularity in more and more countries every year and is now fully established as the world's game. A video game would need include the physicality, danger and raw emotion for players of the game to have the same appeal of a truly popular sport.

Honestly, I don't care for either, but if I had to watch one, it'd be eSports.

I don't think it'll be as popular as football. Maybe in 30 years where everyone on the planet is to fat to run around for 90 minutes things'll change.

"The teams have to kick that ball into the other team's goal. Whoever does that the most wins."

This here is the reason most real world sports will always be more popular than most e-sports. Trying to get into watching dota is worse than trying to get into watching cricket.

I'm 42, do you really expect me to be down with the kids enough to know the correct spelling of Esports?

I'm just happy I have nothing to do with it and can carry on being old and grumpy as nature intends.
