I can see it having more of an effect on Sky than the BBC really. Especially subscribers to Sky Movies. Really the only thing Sky has got left going for it is the sports, and they're milking that for all they can.

Rumour has it that Apple and Google are going to make a serious bid for the Premier League at the end of this season.

Thing is I don't like the idea of where this is all going. At the moment I can just subscribe to sky and get virtually everything I want to watch but soon I can see myself having to sign up to sky, netflix, lovefilm, Google and Apple just to watch the programs i do at the moment. Obviously im not going to do that so my tv viewing pleasure will be ruined.

I've found that has already happened for me with ESPN getting some of the football games.

Proper pisses me off. I pay a lot for my Sky package, and refuse to pay extra for ESPN. :x

ESPN having the games was supposed to be good for consumer. Don't see how it is, when we have to pay more.

Can't see Google or Apple making bids. We hear all these stories always, and then Sky end up with the rights in a record deal.

True, but we have to remember that Sky used to show some of the games on a PPV basis (Prem Plus I think it was called).

It would have been better if the Setanta/ESPN games had to be shown on free to view TV.

Yeah I was going to add that into my little rant earlier. I too refuse to pay extra for ESPN. It annoys me that I miss certain football and rugby matches. But I can live with it at the moment. However if other services start getting exclusive rights to certain programs then I won't be happy.

it will effect sky movies but that about it...

all they do is buy the shows and show them on their system... the BBC / Sky etc. will still have to make the shows they will get paid for them just the same...

its just another way of getting the show it wont have an effect.

It'll be interesting to see how Apple price their games, if it's all PPV, say £5 per game then I could get behind that. I can't imagine Apple having a subscription service..

and it's sadly become so expensive because of the football it becomes hard to justify for a no footy fan,

We've cancelled sky movies in our house after getting the US netflix anyway. Sky should really sell sky anytime as a stand alone product, that way they could better compete.

I've done the same but for LoveFilms streaming service.

they really should do the any time movies as a service. i would take that in a heart beat !! its much better but not worth the cost of the whole movies package.

Good idea.

We're down to just the entertainment channels.

Also dropping sons multi room as he says he'd rather have Netflix, more of what he likes to watch and when he wants to watch it.

I'll miss the cricket and Nfl, rugby less so, but it's just too pricey now and not because of those sports.

I'll have to check out the US lineup, but going on the films available on UK Netflix there's nowhere near enough decent films to warrant getting rid of Sky/Virgin.

I hope Sky does fail at some point. The monopoly they have over sports, movies and US TV shows is ridiculous, I'm surprised Ofcom lets them get away with it. I used to have a Sky Mobile TV subscription (£8 per month for all the Sky Sports channels + ESPN) but they got rid of that an introduced Sky Go where you can no longer get just the sports channels and instead have to pay £44 per month for the full package. No thanks, I just stream it instead now.

With Netflix I'll no longer need to pirate the US shows I want to see (except any HBO stuff).

I can see Sky getting bothered if Netflix can break their exclusivity deal with all the film studios. Until then, they're safe. The BBC's safe too, since the vast majority of their shows are produced for the BBC, so they're probably second best-positioned to transition into the video on demand services (after Channel 4, which is pretty much already there with 4oD).

For some reason too many people are intent on paying a monthly subscription to watch TV they could have got for free. My mum is exactly one of these people - she pays something like £50 per month for a full Sky package and then 95% of the TV she watches is on free to air channels.

I would love to see a "remove your viewing card" week or something, where people continue using their Sky boxes without the viewing card inserted and then find out how much of the TV they watch is unavailable to them. Probably no one would really miss what they are actually paying for at all.
