Interesting stuff about Sony possibly helping to design a GPU for best use in a console and I assume Microsoft will follow suit.

I'll almost certainly get a PS5. But like with the PS4 and PS3 before it, I doubt I'll get one within the first year because of both the cost and lack of games there usually is during that period.

I think if people had to make a choice between native 4K with a frame rate all over the place and 2K at a solid 60fps there would be no contest.

Have you changed your mind since I posted this thread?

For myself I was starting to lean toward the PS5, but sorting out a stack of games this morning to trade into CEX (mainly PS4 and my now redundant OG Xbox titles) I realised that I really don't need another gaming platform. More importantly, where would I find the time? Fact is I wouldn't.

Ive no idea what the next gen is yet so it’s hard to answer.

Although if I have the cash available I’ll end up with PS5 and Xbtwo.

I suspect that I won't jump in at launch because we now know that the console manufacturers are likely to release mid-gen updated versions. Backwards compatibility is a factor for me; I'd like the new machines to be able to play existing games. I am likely to go with a single format next gen. On my PlayStation I enjoy playing PES, ESO and FF XIV online and "how and when" those titles move over to next gen could be a big factor in the format that I choose.

I pretty much still feel the same; certainly on the "no rush" and "still happy with PS4" factors. However, the online MMO aspect is even stronger now as I wouldn't want to move to a different console and be told "soz, you've lost all your progress and gear, so start again lol!".

I've no doubt the next gen will impress, but aside from time and money there's other factors I've considered. My current back catalogue, (which covers pretty every genre), games I've yet to play and those I've yet to buy. I'd like to actually reach a point where I can comfortably say that I've done & dusted or at least experienced for more than a few brief moments games I already own. Buying into a new console would definitely push my catalogue even further back.

I don’t care about my backlog. It’s probably into the hundreds and I accept I’m never going to play them all.

I like new things though so there’s no way I’ll resist shiny new consoles. And rumours suggest they’ll be backward compatible so I won’t be losing my current gen games.

Owing to the fact that there's basically nothing that comes out on Xbox that you can't get on PC I doubt I'll get one. That said...their hardware is beautiful these days. The One X is a brilliant bit of design and functionality.

Will definitely be picking up the new PlayStation even if Sony always manage to make their consoles ugly as sin (apart from the Slimline PS2). Which is weird because most of their other hardware design is great.

Probably not, I'm happy with my Switch.

But the OG PS4 is beautiful :(

To be fair the OG PS4 is much better than the Pro. With the Pro I found the design middling, the colour off ("black" version) and the decision to texture all of the plastic finish blurgh. I liked the contrast between the gloss finish and the textured finish of the OG.

The PS4 slimline is a much better design but still has the same finishing issues as the Pro.

I think a mixture of the OG and the slim would make me happy-ish.

It's amazing how design tastes differ. I really didn't like the gloss finish on (part of) the original PS4, whilst I love the look of the Pro model :-) . I dig simple, boxy designs for consoles and the XBO X looks pretty sleek.

Naming conventions are important, too; "PS4" is - to me - cool, whilst "Xbox One" is lousy. I'd prefer MS to just call their device "Xbox" without the dull "One" appendage; especially when it's not the first in the line.

I dislike how the slim is asymmetric in height of the two sandwich halves. I also find the lack of dividing light bar and gloss/matte tops much less appealing. Similar complaints can be leveled at the pro, and the three tier sandwich is a definite failure.

I swapped out an orange faceplate onto my PS4 and I find the highlight really striking.

(Mine is flat though, the vertical stand absolutely ruins it)

I'll likely get a PS5 at launch, they've consistently delivered great AAA games that suit my taste and it seems like all my PS4 games will work on it too.

I'll get "Switch 2" eventually, as much as I love the Switch it can seem like an age waiting for the next big game to come, and when they do the prices are high and take years to drop.

"Xbox Infinity", doubt I'll get the console, other than Forza Horizon and Sunset Overdrive I don't feel like I've missed out at all this gen. By the sounds of things I'll be able to just dip in and out of their streaming service like Netflix if there's anything I want to play.

Isn’t it tied to your account anyway? I’m sure Seven played FF online using the same account email for pc and PS4?

Worth asking him.

And if the rumours are true, you’ll be able to play PS4 games on the PS5 so there may be some hope.

Yes, it's been a problem, and I have both a PS4Pro and an XB1X. To say there is significant overlap would be an understatement. However, looking at my games collections on both, there are some redeeming factors.

1. PS4 has some stand-out titles not available on XB1X - and the same goes the other way for XB1X.
2. I've 'curated' my games collection so there's no duplication between the two: if I have the same title for both, I'll opt for the XB1X version. If I'm looking to buy a cross-platform title, I'll go for the XB1X version.
3. In my experience, the XB1X versions of cross-platform titles look and perform better than their equivalent on PS4Pro.

I think next time around, with whatever the next generation of consoles will be, for me it will all hinge around issues of performance. XB1X is clearly the best console available right now in this department and it shows in the games I have on both XB1X and PS4Pro.

The other HUGE factor will be back-compat and, if available, how well it is supported. I literally bought my XB1X to play the enhanced HD versions of the FFXIII trilogy - and discovered, happily, Game Pass and XB1X back-compat for a swathe of 360 games I still had all the original disks for. This kind of thing will play a very big part in my purchasing decisions when the next console generation swings around.

They got it right first time :-).

At least Sony re-branded their first console as (gnnngh!) "one" rather than their third  .

Unfortunately, whilst FFXIV allows PC and PS4 players to play together, I don't believe that characters are transferable; you have to start again. I will give Seven a shout though, Wedgie :-). And, yeah, I really hope that PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4.
