2020/21 seems to be the general feeling when the next batch of consoles will launch, but is it something you'll be investing in?

Was chatting to a friend over a few beers about the next generation of game consoles at the weekend. I still enjoy my gaming and will no doubt continue to do so for a time, (I have quite the back catalogue), but as my children get older and my priorities change, both financially and personally, (certainly as I draw ever closer to the big 50), more game consoles isn't something I can honestly see myself buying into.

Of course a lot can happen between now and when they launch.

Most probably, but it's too early to say because we don't know anything about those consoles.

I voted 'Yes, Xbox' because I'm too heavily invested in Achievements now to even consider anything else. Might not buy in at launch though, I'm not particularly interested in newer and shinier versions of the same things and I have an enormous backlog.

I will most likely go for the next Playstation, but I certainly wouldn't get one at launch.

I haven't invested in the current gen, so it seems unlikely. If I do, it'll be years down the line.

I will be doing and in all likelihood I'll buy both if it's financially viable but as it stands I still have a backlog from the last generation, let alone the current one and I doubt I'll be caught up by then so I will try and hold off as much as possible.

If PS5 is backwards compatible (X86 all but guarantees this) and Sony continue their amazing first party output I'll be getting a PS5.

Other than Sunset Overdrive there hasn't been a single Xbox game this generation I've really wanted that wasn't on PS4, I don't see Microsoft fixing their dire first party problem any time soon.

As for Nintendo, I might pick up the Switch successor up, but probably a few years after launch.

I'm playing fewer and fewer games these days as I have less time so I have to be incredibly picky. Most likely God of War, Spider-man and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the only games I buy this year.

As long as Sony don't gooseberry fool the bed with regards to BC I'm definitely in for PS5 first.

Only just got an Xbox One X so I'm in no hurry to jump to another Xbox anytime soon. Again, unless Sony screws up ridiculously in which case I'll go Xbox.

I've long since accepted that I'll always have a backlog (It's probably in high double digits if I'm honest with myself) and I'm fine with that.

My main hope is for some improvement with the VR aspects of the systems.

1080p/60fps option for all games then I'm in for a new Playstation. Can't see me going for another Xbox until the quality of their first party stuff dramatically improves.

Regarding this, Microsoft are opening up a new studio in Santa Monica (home of Last of Us' Naughty Dog and God of War's SMS) which seems to be a hotbed of talent.

Saying that, we've seen from the two above developer's historic output that it takes years and years to form a top quality studio.

Nah I've got my switch and I'll upgrade my PC once video card prices calm down.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Probably Xbox, it wont be right away mind, I may go for whatever the switch 2 is depending on how the longevity of the switch pans out as I'm still not convinced a tablet device can stand up to heavy load for long amounts of time and survive more than a couple of years.

What makes you think the Switch will be less hardy than a Vita or a 3DS?

I'm definitely getting a PS5 but will hold off getting an Xbox until the inevitable mid gen refresh.

Tablet devices just don't last that well over 2 years and ultimately the Switch is a tablet it has better cooling and that but it is still a tablet device. Also compared to a 3DS it produces gooseberry fool loads of heat which can effect the device.

Yeah, unsure which. Backwards compatibility will be of significance to me though. Also I don't know if I should jump in or wait on the Pro/X versions.

Next Xbox possibly at launch, safe in the knowledge that all the games linked to my account will work Day 1.

I went with "No" based on the available options. I'll be upgrading my PC in the next year or two, and will likely pick up whatever the successor to the Switch is, but I've been done with MS and Sony for a while now - last consoles I bought from either were the 360 and PS2 respectively. Can't see that changing anytime soon whilst I've got access to everything I want on PC or Switch.
