PostWindows 7 problem - no sound

Right, siginificant problem with my Windows 7 installation. I have no sound.

Performed a custom installation of Windows 7 64-bit, up from Vista 32-bit, and deleted my windows.old file. Everything is fine, except for the fact that I can't get 7 to recognise any software drivers for my onboard audio device. I've been fiddling around with this for the best part of four hours now, and I'm officially stumped. Running a Socket 775 Asus P5B deluxe Wi-Fi motherboard, and updated the BIOS to the most recent release earlier tonight. That hasn't helped, nor has downloading the various incarnations of the Soundmax audio drivers from the Asus website. In fact, I've downloaded various versions of the Soundmax drivers, sourced from both that Asus utility site and various unnamed blogs/message boards, all to no avail.

The speaker icon at the bottom right-hand corner has a little red cross over it, and hovering over it brings up the message 'No Speakers or headphones are currently plugged in'. (Earlier it displayed the message 'No audio output devices are installed'). Except, they are. I have an optical cable running from the SPDIF port at the back of my computer running to my sound system, a setup that worked fine in Vista. Even plugging in a standard pair of headphones into the regular audio port doesn't change this.

If I click the red cross, Windows 7 tries to run the audio playback diagnostic tool, but fails every time. Error code 0x800B0003, Path: Unknown, Source: Engine, Context: Elevated.

If I go to Control Panel>Sound, it brings up the three playback devices that should be working - headphones, speakers (not plugged in) and SPDIF Digital Audio, which is ticked green. High Definition Audio Device, Enabled.

If I go to Device Manager, Sound, video and game controllers, it shows the generic High Definition Audio Device driver. Always. Can't get it to show the Soundmax drivers for love nor money.

This is driving me strawberry floating mental.

Help.

EDIT - I've now got the Soundmax drivers to appear in the Device manager window, but that shitting red cross remains. Back to saying 'No Audio Output Device installed'. NNNggh.

Install the drivers and reboot. You could also try deleting the items from the device manager then rebooting.

Check Windows update too. The hardware of mine that wasn't picked up by defaul was downloaded automatically through Windows Update.

Did all that last night. Eventually I got so fed up that I reinstalled the 32-bit version of 7, and it found the audio driver automatically afterwards. Ah well.

So your hardware doesn't have 64bit versions of the drivers?

It should do, and I'd downloaded at least a couple that claimed they were just that, but they weren't being recognised at all.

Lesson is that still today a lot of 64-bit stuff fails. Don't bother unless you know your shizzle works before installing the operating system.

And always test the OS on separate partition before making it your primary OS. That's what I'm doing and my graphics drivers are going crazy, but it's okay cos it's just a test bed.

I'm finding it uber wierd, TBH, because my 64bit Vista rig is just fine and dandy.

I've got Win 7 sitting right here, but I'm not planning on installing it just yet.

I would at least wait until the OS is actually released to the general public and the inevitable driver shitstorm has been patched up at least a month or two down the line.

I'm planning on building a new machine for it, TBH.
