There's not much you can do with Windows running natively on the tablet that you couldn't do with remote desktop running as an app on Android or iOS.

I've got a tablet, and I use it as a couch surfer. I honestly can't see why I'd want to use one with a fully featured OS. What's the point? All I use it for is a bit of surfing and some Youtube videos.

Well some people don't like to waste money on countless devices that do the same thing. Not everyone's a tech geek who wants everything that comes out.

If you want a device which does everything, buy a laptop. Tablets aren't the answer. Unless you get a tablet with a keyboard, ergo a laptop. Or one of those laptops with a touchscreen where you can fold it so it looks like a tablet.

For any sort of work which requires prolonged use with a keyb, or if you're doing something which requires heavy processing, a tablet as an 'all in one' device is not the answer. Even with Windows 8 on it.

Bingo! Connect a wireless/USB keyboard and wireless mouse and your future tablet becomes a full blown PC. It's better than Apple and Google's draconian vision of future computing.

Doesn't matter, because we'll all want to do stuff on our FUTURE PCs which will be beyond the scope of FUTURE tablets.

But if your requirements are no more than a current day office/media PC then having full Windows on future tablets won't exactly be pointless will it.

I purposely didn't mention games, although I could have done. Fact is, tablets by their very nature are always going to be behind full blown PCs. Now some people don't require alot of computing power, people who surf the internet, write emails watch the occasional video. So the computing power in a tablet would be perfect adequate for them. Hence why I said 'light' users.

Besides, if you'd be better off with low power laptop than a tablet as an all one PC. Less portable, yes. But more comfortable to work on and considerably cheaper.

But you can do most if not all of those things on current tablets without a full install of Windows.

There are so many UI considerations for tablets because of the fact that your screen is both your input and your display, having something like a full blown version of windows on it is never going to be that great in comparison to using it on a proper PC.

Multitasking is still the bane of tablets. Even if you manage to get enough grunt in the thing to do it properly, the UI still makes it a considerably worse experience to just jumping between them with a mouse and a taskbar.

I've seen a few prototype designs of tablet/laptop hybrids where the keyboard slides from behind the screen similar to mobiles, except they fold out like a laptop. I'll try to find a link later.

I'm still waiting for tablets as an input/output device for the desktop PC, to be honest, rather than as standalone systems.

Despite Apple's attempts to steer the future of tablets into a mobile phone direction, there isn't anything stopping companies from letting your use a mouse with your tablet if it's needed.

It was just the first google result for "flip tablet". I have to admit that it's a clever design, though I wouldn't want one from Dell either.

If Apples macbook air can be that thin and have that much power in it, I can see the future of tablets being very bright and very powerful to the point that the power difference between pcs and tablets won't be a problem, in the same way that consoles this gen can run pc games on low settings and still look good, while PCs can max gooseberry fool out and throw pixels down onto your screen like there's no tomorrow.

I should've mentioned that before, I'm surprised Apple haven't yet evolved the design to make a 'Mac Pad'. Obviously OSX would need to be modified to make it more touch friendly, but it's more feasible than people here make out.

RE : Macbook air. Yes, wonderful form factor and as thin as a tablet with considerably more power. However,

They don't have to have a touch screen.

And those strawberry floaters can run very hot. Apple designed it so heat dissipates from the metal case. Not really an option for tablets for obvious reasons.
